10 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, December 13, 1988 Morphos Gallery opening Vivien and Tony Reynolds have travelled many miles in order to open their Morphos Studios Gal- lery on Scugog Island. Vivien left New Zealand eight years ago--Tony hails from Eng- and, and somehow, they wound up in a quaint old farmhouse one mile east of the Scugog Shores Museum, off the Island Road. They moved in last June, leav- ing Pickering and Toronto behind, and settling in with a friendly mutt named Blue and two cats-- Razzamataz and Rum Tum Tig- ger. Building permits down from lastyear Scugog Township won't quite reach the $50 million mark in building permits this year, but it's close. A report from the Township building permit shows that up to the end of December, permits-val- ued at $46.3 million had been is- sued. The figure for the first 11 months last year was just under $40 million. While the dollar total is up this year, the report shows that the residential building sector slowed considerably in 1988, compared to last year. The Township issued permits for 280 new homes to the end of November, compared with 332 last year. But those 280 permits carried a total value of $36 million. The 332 homes built last year had a value of $31 million. This reflects both an increase in the cost of construction and the penchant people have these days or larger homes. ORT P. "We really like it here. I've always wanted to live in a place like this." And she's always wanted a gal- lery as well, somewhere to show off her and her husband's arts and crafts. Vivien is a weaver, fashioning functional and beautiful pieces on two looms in their farmhouse. From miniature tapestries to silk damask to luxurious placemats, she does it all. Tony, who holds down a full- time job outside the house, com- bines photography, ceramics and woodwork to create unique pieces of art. The gallery officially opened Wednesday December 7 with an open house. Unfortunately, it was not well-attended. Vivien wasn't really surprised. "I expect it will be slow for news to spread," she admitted. The name "Morphos" refers to the transformation that occurs in life, as in a metamorphosis, and in art. "I think we all go through it in some sense," Vivien said. Peaceful and inviting, with comfortable chairs and one of Viv- ien's looms on display, the gallery is open Wednesday to Friday from 10 am. to 5 p.m., or by phoning 985-0860. To all our pore We would like to wish you all a Blessed Christmas 'and God's richest blessings for the New Year.
