Mystery Sister supper was a pleasurable night Scugog Island Area News by Mrs. Earl Reader On Wed. evening 23 ladies met at Conway Place for the annual Mystery Sister Supper. They were pleased to welcome guests Miss Bolton, Mrs. Lucille Gray & Mrs. Valorie Freeman. Several miss- ing members were remembered. The first noted impressions were the warm atmosphere with Christmas decorations with a beautifully decorated table in the middle. But it wasn't completed until the talented Clara Dowson added her annual, crafted favours & place cards. We now have quite a collection of these interesting momentos. After a delicious meal & A Life Guide by David Beesley. You've probably heard it by now. My first exposure to it came while I was roaming through a shopping mall..."The landlord says your rent is late; he may have to litigate"...it's rhythmic phrases emanating from a Sam the Record Man store . Again, it confronted me while bowling. I had just blown a golden spare opportunity when it's catchy words flashed across an overhead electronic message- board. Then my five year old son said it after I had lost my cool over something totally trivial at home. He replied rather matter-of-factly, "Dad, don't worry; be happy!" There it was again -- that omnipresent arrow of advice being aimed at me from every direction. Why does singer-writer Bobby McFerrin's song have such popular appeal? Here lies the answer. Each of us faces the daily barrage of life's problems and pressures, the circumstances and events which threaten 'to bury us alive. In the face of personal dilemna, we look for some source of hope, any hint of reassurance that things might get better. Then along comes this simple suggestion - "Don't worry; be happy," a positive word g foinsel to help us get through it, whatever it happens I suppose that's good. In an age of anxiety, people need something to support them under the crushing weight of helplessness. It is no exaggeration to say that ours is a society largely unable to cope with the dizzy- ing effect of pressures that feel insurmountable, pro- blems that seem unsolvable. Sociologist Sheila Willson comments in a recent issue of Toronto magazine: "anxiety usually comes from a sense of helplessness. Whether the problems are big and external, such as the environment or the threat of Nuclear war - or complex and internal, such as in- security or unhappiness - the problem is we just don't feel we are in charge of ourselves any more." However, it is here, that the "don't worry; be hap- py" philosophy fails us. It is inadequate. It does not tell us why we should not worry or how we can be happy. It cannot point to any real basis of confidence. It relies on blind trust. In the face of an overwhelming sense of despera- tion you need something more than pat answers and cute platitudes. You want real medicine not placebos. What we need is a religious faith. Yes, a religious faith, and I'll tell you why. Anything but faith in God is escapism (Many people consider faith escapism, but they're confused - if there is a God, you can't escape him). And escapism doesn't make life easier, it is a blind alley leading to disillusionment. I think that in these days of high anxiety we can adopt a fundamental outlook - a mindset to help us deal with our problems. Let's call it God - consciousness - an unshakable awareness of the resources available to us through faith in a power higher than ourselves. Because I firmly believe in our need to not worry and be happy let me show you some thoughts written by Saint Paul, himself at times a worrier and prone to periods of sensed helplessness. "Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything; tell God your needs and don't forget to thank him for his answers. If you do this you will ex- perience God's peace, which is far more wonderful than the human mind can understand. His peace will keep your thoughts and your hearts quiet and at rest as you trust in Christ Jesus." (Phil. 4:6,7 Living Bible) What is your source of hope? Don't try to limp along any longer without a trusting relationship with God. Remember this: In Him ... you don't have to worry and -you can be happy. Think about it! (Rev. David Beesley is Pastor of Emmanuel Pentecostal Church in Port Perry). disclosure of Mystery Sisters of the year, the program had a most interesting, variety of numbers to include a reading to demonstrate the occasion when Father puts up the Christmas Tree, a T.V. puzzler involving Christmas or Church involvement answers. Betty Reader had gathered a variety contest which might have made the participants feel they really didn't know much about their own community or were not mindful of personal interests or just forgetful. Allen Redman and his friend, Harry Argue of Markham recent- ly returned from a 3-day holiday in Las Vegas. They had enjoyed a similar trip last Nov. so much, they had decided to return to the same place. Recently, we saw pictures of 2 Island Couples who were celebrating their Golden Anniver- sary on the same day. Their backgrounds were quite different as Mr. and Mrs. Chudy came from a distant area while Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Fralick have pioneer ancestors and have lived on the Island all their lives. While the Chudys have lived at McLaren's Beach 11 yrs., the Fralick's live at the opposite side of the Island on Conc. 10. Anyway the Island people ex- tend congratulations to both couples and hope they may meet sometime. Helen & Clifford Redman have returned from a week's vacation in Florida. This year Tony and Heidi Krieg of Conc. 9 went hunting as usual, and what do you think? - Heidi dropped her second moose, this time with a 52 inch antler spread. She's quite a hunter. Sunday, Dec. 4 being the first Sun. of the month, it will be Pan- try Sunday at the Island United for the Food Bank. There will be a Sacrament of Baptism, Sacra- ment of Holy Communion and a Reception of Members by Transfer. On Thurs., Dec. 1 of this week, the Christian Women's Club will have a Continental Breakfast at the Latcham Centre, 9:30-11:30 a.m., catered by the Meating Place. A special feature will be '"'Holiday Entertaining'. For Nursery & Breakfast reserva- tions, please call Cheryl 985-7516. In spite of all the talk about gar- bage & littering, a resident was recently seen gathering up 2 bags of garbage thrown along the road- side near their home. Many of these people motor along to enjoy the beauty of our land without caring what they do to destroy that beauty. We are always interested in lengthy Island residents & keep up the interest after they move away. Hence we congratulate the former Mrs. Linda LeRoy of Fralick's Beach now Mrs. Baca as her work has progressed in the Community Library and was recently recognized by the local paper and national T.V.- C.F.T.O. She is loved by all the little children who enjoy her talents in storytime. The Ladies Coffee Hour of Port Perry Baptist Church will hold their annual Christmas Breakfast on Tuesday, December 6 at 9:30 a.m. All ladies from the area are invited. The Women's Missionary Fellowship of Port Perry Baptist Church met to make Christmas novelties which will be distributed among the residents of the Chateau Blue group home on December 19 at which time the ladies will present a Christmas program.
