56 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 29, 1988 Odd Fellows host to special U.N. evening A very special evening was held in the Odd Fellow and Rebekah Temple in Port Perry on Friday, Oct. 28th. Last July the Odd Myrtle area news by Sonja Graham Many thanks are extended to Pam Rennie who hosted a lovely craft sale on Nov. 24th. The talents of local people were displayed and the turn out was good. Everyone had an enjoyable evening, thanks again Pam. At the recent Durham West 4-H Awards dinner, held in Uxbridge, three local members received awards. Congratulations to Dar- rell Wade who received a trophy for being the Champion Showman in the Beef Club, and a trophy for contributing the most in the Veterinary Club. Anne Parrinder received her Provincial Honours Award for completion of twelve 4-H projects. Janet Stachow and Darrell Wade received recognition for their par- ticipation in the "Reach for the Top' competition. Darrell Wade also participated in the Queens Guineas Competi- tion at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto. Myrtle residents wish Helen Duff a speedy recovery from her recent foot surgery. Choir practice will be Wednes- day evening, Nov. 30th at 7:30 - 8:30 at the church. Anyone who enjoys singing is invited to attend, and join in the singing of the beautiful Christmas music. Fellows and Rebekah Lodges in this area sponsored a student as a delegate to the Odd Fellow and Rebekah Pilgrimage for Youth to the United Nations in New York. For some 30 years these students who are sent by our Lodges on this Pilgrimage, are the only sponsored group to have such access to the United Nations, where they are treated, not as tourists, but as a Special Delega- tion. They are allowed to sit in the General Assembly, and also in the Security Council. In these sessions the students are addressed for some 30 to 45 minutes by Delegates from various nations, and from specified Secretariats, such as Unicef. After this lecture, certain students are allowed to ask ques- tions of the Delegates, and are favoured with answers. Student Delegates attend from most Pro- vince Jurisdictions in Canada, and from United States, and a few from Europe. These Students gain a wonderful experience by shar- ing rooms, and joining in meals and seminars with fellow students from all over North America. On this night in October, Odd Fellows, Rebekahs, families and friends from this District gathered in our Lodge Hall to receive the report and hear the address of our own chosen Stu- dent Delegate, Greg Gillespie of Oshawa. Greg not only won the trip from us, but when he address- ed the Assembly in New York, he was judged top delegate speaker for the entire year. For this he won a trip to Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where he ad- dressed the Sovereign Grand Lodge of Odd Fellows of the world. We in Canada, in Ontario, and especially in this District are very proud of him. We were for- tunate that same evening to be addressed by a fellow student delegate Rowena Hill, who was sponsored as a delegate by a Toronto District, and attends Leaside High School. She was judged among the top 10 students for the year.
