~ Port Pee Wees sluggish after a long layoff On Thursday, November 24th the Pee Wee Legionaires travell- ed to Millbrook, for their first game in more than two weeks, and came away losing 3-0. The lack of playing time was evident in this game, as several of the players seemed half a step behind, both with passes and checks. Despite this, the Port team put out a good effort, keeping the game within one goal difference for most of the time. Millbrook scored half-way through the first period, after some good end to end play, with chances for both teams. This was a screened shot and the Port goalie had no chance on the shot. In the second period the end to end play continued, with Duane Empringham and Jeff Card com- bining to play several good shifts, teamed with several other part- ners. While playing short handed Adam Johnston made a solo rush down the ice, but was hauled down, with no penalty issued, to quell the threat. Later Gavin Cochrane rang a blast from the blue line off the post, which spark- ed the team to apply lots of pressure, without any luck. Penalties were the problem for the Legionaires in the third period, as Millbrook tallied two goals, both on the power-play. It must be said that the Millbrook goal tender was very good in net and made many fine saves, and that the game was a lot closer than the score indicated. The following evening, Friday 25th, Port Perry played an exhibi- tion game at home against Ajax. This time the team was more in time with each other, and manag- ed a 4-2 win. In the first five minutes Port played a bit on the cautious side, being limited to shots from the blue line. After killing a penalty with relative ease the Legionaires opened up and started to apply pressure, but the Ajax goalie stop- ped everything shot at him. A third of the way into the se- cond period Port Perry opened the scoring, with a strange shot, deflecting into the net from an Ajax player. Jeff Card was credited with the goal, assists go- ing to Jeff Andrews and Duane Empringham. Three minutes later Ajax got on the scoreboard to tie the game. The Port team were breaking from their own end for an attack, when Ajax intercepted a pass, and were in with two players clear, to take advantage of the opportunity. Port Perry roared straight back down the ice to score, just Setat Xmas On November 15, Chris Allen Aluminum Tweens travelled to Iroquois Park to play Whitby. Port put together their finest ef- fort to this date, however came up short to the much bigger and more experienced Marigolds 11-3. The Tweens are showing pro- mising signs in their skills developed in practice and should open some eyes by Xmas. Point getters were Shannon Fox 2 goals; Amy Parliamant 1 goal; with assists going to Michelle Fitzpatrick with 3; Jennifer Morden 1 and Kendra McCrae 1. seventeen seconds later. Jeff Card scored with Jeff Andrews assisting. Twenty seconds after that, Port was on the scoreboard again, with Jeff Card notching his hat trick, assisted once again by Jeff Andrews. This ended the scoring for the second period, with Port Perry leading 3-1. Ajax were not finish- ed, though, and came back with a goal five minutes into the final period. This was a pass out from behind the net, with the shot go- ing just in the far corner, to beat the goalie. Four minutes later the Legionaires answered with another goal, this one a rush up the full length of the ice by Jeff Andrews, assisted by Jason Coutoulakis, a short-handed goal. Ajax applied pressure again, and had a goal disallowed, but could not manage to score later, due to having to play short-handed. Sunday 27th saw the team play- ing at Bowmanville, at the new complex, and coming away with a 3-1 win. The players came to win this game, and started to apply the pressure quite early. Both teams had chances to score in the first period, with Duane Empr- ingham ringing a shot off the post, being the best chance of a goal. The Legionaires killed off a penal- ty at the end of the first period, allowing no shots on net, leaving the game scoreless going into the second period. Port Perry turned on the of- fence, with the line of Adam Johnston, Dave Bourgeois and Dave Pashley showing some fine hustle, creating chances for the Legionaires. Five minutes into the frame Duane Empringham put Port in the lead with a backhand shot, after some neat stick-handling in front of the Bowmanville net. The assist went to Dave Bourgeois. Bowmanville turned on the at- tack after this goal, with Rick Hutchinson having to make two good saves to keep them out. Port went back on the offensive with a power-play, and had a goal disallowed, while peppering the net with shots. This ended the se- cond period, with Port leading 1-0. The third period saw the Legionaires stronger than ever, with the defence snuffing out the many attacks Bowmanville started. The only goal that Bowmanville managed was when they had a four to three man ad- vantage. Back at full strength, Port poured it on, with two quick goals to decide the game. The first was a good play by Jeff An- drews, heading for the net, then dropping the puck back for Duane Empringham, trailing the play. Duane made no mistake and tuck- ed the puck in the top corner. The final marker was a hard drive by Gavin Cochrane, with a pass from Dave Bourgeois, from behind the net.
