|| Downtown merchants meet to discuss BIA, @ and parking problems | A very important meeting of the Port Perry Downtown | | businesses will take place this Wedesday evening to dis- | cuss the implementation of a Business Improvement Area. | All business people within the areas bounded by North and Mary Streets and Water to Lilla Street are urged to at- | tend. The proposed BIA would include all businesses with- in this area, whether they are currently a member of the Port Perry Downtown Merchants or not. It is hoped there will be enough support for the BIA pro- posal to approach council about circulating the necessary by-law of intent in the near future. In addition to discussion on the BIA proposal, the direc- tors of the Downtown Merchants will present their plans for Christmas advertising promotion; and the Parking commit- tee will outline a report on the condition of parking in down- town Port Perry along with some possible solutions. The meeting gets underway at 7:30 P.M. this Wednes- | day, November 16 at the Latcham Centre. Too many newspapers to re-cycle The Durham Recycling Centre is experiencing an over-supply of newspapers waiting to be shipped for recycling. But Glenda Gies, manager of the Centre in Whitby said there is no way the public will be asked to curtail the amount of newspapers put into the blue curb-side boxes, and neither will be the stock-piles be shipped to a landfill site. Ms. Gies told the Star last week the Recycling Centre cur- rently has about a week's supply of baled newspapers (250 tonnes) waiting to be shipped, and the Centre is running out of storage The Centre ships the baled newspapers to the Ontario Paper plant in Thorold where it is de- inked and converted into newsprint that can be used again. Ms. Gies said one option is to ship the stock-piles south of the border, even though the price is $20 per tonne (US) compared with $60 per tonne paid in Canada. There are several reasons why the stock-piles of newspapers are high in Durham right now. The first is that Metro Toronto has be- come heavily involved in recy- cling this fall; newspapers at this time of year tend to be thicker; and public acceptance of the need to recycle has been overwhelming. "I suspect this problem (of over-supply) will be an on again- off again thing for the next few months," said Ms. Gies. But she said the problem should be easier to manage next year when another large company 1s scheduled to start buying recy- cled newspapers. « Each basket individually created for that special someone «A variety of sizes, shapes, contents and prices + Order now for best selection Ta Gift Baskets of Distinction for Holiday Giving « Ideal for family, neighbours, teachers and other special friends « An excellent corporate gift for both employees and clients * Delivery available HOURS OF BUSINESS -- Saturday & Monday to Thursday 10 AM to 6 PM; Friday 10 AM to 9 PM; Sunday 1 PM to 5 PM 158 QUEEN ST., PORT PERRY 985-0025 (24 hrs.)
