In the opening scene of John Pielmeier's drama, the agnostic psychiatrist tells us that she still wants to believe in a happy ending for every story, "It all depends on how thoroughly you look for it." This seems to foreshadow a hap- py ending. But happy for whom? The psychiatrist who must deter- mine whether or not a murderer was sane; the Mother Superior (Just call me sister) who loves and defends -- almost too well or the inigmatic Agnes -- a stigmatist who conceives and ap- parently murders her baby. This is one of those wonderful plays that you want to discuss with your friends until the wee hours. Who impregnated Agnes? Was it the shy priest or a villager who climbed the walls (a con- templative order - visitors are very rare) or was it ----? and why does the psychiatrist return to her faith at the end of the play? This is not easy stuff to bring to Honeydale Women's Agnes of God a sure hit for the Borelians the stage. But John Foote is not one to shy away from cerebral theatre, especially if it packs the punch of an Agnes of God. Sandy James, Sherri Todd and Halie Vogel are already well on their way to establishing these characters as their own. John helps by using an introspective method of directing. Sitting in on .a rehearsal you will hear him ask the actors how they feel about a scene, or what they thought about a line. It's his way of having them "become" their character. It is, of course, another derivitive of Stanislouski's An Actor Prepares. This play may not be everyone's cup of tea. However, if you like good drama this pro- duction looks like a sure hit. Then the happy ending will be in the au- dience as the play ends. Pick up your five dollar ticket early at Just Around the Corner and circle the dates December 8, 9 and 10. Institute meeting by Lillian Harper, P.R.O. The November meeting of Honeydale Women's Institute was held on Thursday, Nov. 3, with a good attendance, though we did miss several members who were absent for various reason. Our President, Mary Cannon, opened the meeting in the regular form, and welcomed everyone, in- cluding two visitors. The roll call " What would you like to see changed in your community' was most timely, in view of the fact that the municipal elections were imminent. Many constructive suggestions were put forth by the members. It was reported that $25.00 had been sent to Erland Lee Museum in memory of our recently deceas- ed member, Flossie Ploughman. The mystery bus trip in October was most enjoyable and suc- cessful, with $55.00 being turned in after all expenses were paid. We are to bring non-perishable food to our December meeting, Guaranteed Investment Certificates 10+ 1 YEAR TERM Paid Annually Min. Deposit $500. RATES SHOWN -- PER ANNUM Higher Interest on Your Investments for Operation Scugog, to be given along with a $25.00 donation from the Institute. We are having a pot luck lun- cheon, also a gift exchange at our December meeting. The Motto - "The past cannot be changed, - the future is still in your hands" - was ably dealt with by Alice Dodd, who gave most fit- ting comments and inspiring thoughts on that subject. Our guest speaker, Jean Mar- tyn, was introduced by Alice. Jean gave an interesting and descriptive talk about her stay at '"'Chautauqua", in New York State, this summer. It offers a great variety of interesting ac- tivities, so that those who attend have no difficulty in finding something to fit their interests. A vote of thanks was given to Jean for sharing her experiences with us. Following adjournment and singing of '"'O'Canada' we en- joyed a social cup of tea. Remember your vote directly affects your next THREE YEARS of peaceful enjoyment, recreation and TAXES. Fellow-Candidates appear to believe that the most important issue is SPORTS AND RECREATION FUNDING. While | agree that it is an important issue, it is only one of several. DO NOT BE MISLEAD! The Municipal Act of Ontario states specifically that developer's lot levies revenue can only be used for Capital Projects such as sewer, roads and similar purposes. In order to use levy revenue for "other" purposes, i.e. support of sports and recreation, it would require a special by-law to be passed by Township Council. This would, of necessity, specify the sport or recreation to be supported. Do you truly believe this would be equitable? THINK ABOUT IT! DO NOT BE BOUGHT WITH YOUR OWN MONEY! | Borrowed money must be re-paid along with substantial interest. For each $23,500. of Township expenditure, the mill rate (the factor which dictates YOUR tax amount to pay) increases by a full point. Obviously it does not require a math degree to see where we could end up without the exercise of fiscal responsibility and sound judgement. Successive Federal Governments have utilized 'Deficit Financing', (borrowed money), to buy votes. Your ever-diminishing pay cheque is the price you pay. Do you really want that at the local level too? THINK ABOUT IT! PROGRESS AND DEVELOPMENT ARE NOT NECESSARILY THE SAME! Development can be progressive and that which is, is not only beneficial but indeed, welcome. However, some development creates more problems than it solves. Our town is unique in many ways and also very vulnerable in others. Hasty decisions based upon political expediancy have a way of ending as hor- ror stories. FUTURE IMPACT -- THINK ABOUT IT! On November the 14th, YOU must decide who will properly manage YOUR tax dollars. As the chief financial officer of major corporations prior to the establishment of my own financial consulting business, | can and will give you the integrity and experience so necessary to discharge the duties of office. EXPERIENCE -- THINK ABOUT IT! The November 1st issue of this newspaper carried several advertisements for a fellow-candidate stating what HE STANDS FOR. He is a good sport. He wants all of us to be good sports. However, on page 25 he stands for "NO TAX INCREASES". PHEWW! Imagine, a magician on Council! It boggles the mind! | welcome your inquiries and support and can be contacted at my home at 985-3373, after 6:00 p.m., please. Sincerely, KEITH CHARLES REMEMBER IN NOVEMBER CHARLES ...
