14 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 8, 1988 HAROLD WESTERMAN Helping and serving people is something I've always enjoyed doing. I am currently serving on the Scugog Arena Board. In the past I have been involved with minor sports and the local Kinsmen Club. I am always will- ing to listen and discuss problems and concerns of the residents of Scugog. Some of the concerns I believe that the new council of Scugog - will have to deal with are upgrading and adding sports . facilities, our garbage dump, Sun- day shopping, and increasing or freezing development. I feel I can help council in making the proper decision to benefit Ward 1 and Scugog Township. I am 44 years old and have worked for General Motors for the past 26 years. My family and I have lived in the Port Perry area for the past 10 years. My wife Nellie works in downtown Port Perry for a local business. We have two children, Joanne atten- ding the University of Windsor, our son Jan is going to Port Perry High School. I am both willing and able to represent the people of Ward 1 as an effective councillor for the Township of Scugog. I am employed as an alcoholism counsellor at Pinewood in Oshawa as well as volunteering at Proba- tion and Parole and St. John Ambulance. For several years I have had a keen interest in Municipal Politics because it is the one level of government in that the elected representatives can have close communication with -the elec- torate. With my experience in teaching, consulting and representing groups, I feel qualified to be aware of the needs of the people and to act upon these concerns. In the next three years I would like to see definite plans in regards to land development, gar- bage disposal, water and other essential services as well as - recreational facilities, With con- ~ certed efforts in this direction I am confident that we can continue to enjoy our present lifestyle in this area. School Board for 8 years and is current- ly chairman. This Board deals with a $90,000,000. budget and is responsible for 17,000 students. Tia believes her experience as a trustee and chairman will help her as a councillor - preparing budgets, setting policies, negotiating, being involved in five year planning, voicing the con- cerns of the ratepayers, working co-operatively, researching, con- ducting meetings and speaking at many functions. Some of her objectives are -- to create a distinctive identity for Scugog, to ensure planned growth, to engage in long range planning, to ensure that necessary facilities and services are provided, to study communi- ty needs, costs and potential fun- - ding, to work for needed recrea- tion facilities and to voice the con- cerns of the residents of Ward 1. Tia promises to work extreme- ly hard to make Scugog a good place to live -- a community where people enjoy living, work- ing and playing together. HOGAN 230 Queen Street * NOTE NEW NUMBER * 985-4422 NEIL HUNTER On November 14 we will elect for three years one of 4 candidates to represent Ward 1. Though we all take it for granted, it seems we should be grateful to live in such a wonderful country and Township as Scugog. I am a 64 year old farmer and family man, and a taxpayer for 34 years in this township. Have been active in community affairs, such as Port Perry Fair Board, School Board, Reach Township Council and several terms on Scugog Township Council. I am not against orderly growth, and believe in pay as you go for recreational facilities. This could come from lot levies, tax dollars are limited. On November 14 we will have the opportunity to elect a New Mayor, Regional Councillor, and new Councillors. I would like to devote my time to being a part of this council by representing Ward 1. I would appreciate your support. stolen Crime Stoppers and Durham Regional Police are asking for the Public's help in solving the theft of a forty-five gallon drum con- taining a mixture of Earth and PCB's.
