38 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 1. 1988 Both games on Saturday in the Novice House League were ex- citing and close. In the first game, IGA collect- ed its first win of the season with a 2-0 shutout over Remax. Danny Lyons had both the goals for the winners with assists going to Scott Jefferies, Chad Barker and Jeremy Heyworth. Troy Campbell was in goal for IGA and earned the shutout. The second game of the day saw Port Perry Printing outlast Davids Hairstyling 4-3. Aaron Levy scored twice for the Printérs with singles to Jona- than Froates and Jonathan Reid. Chris Jamieson was the big playmaker .with three assists and Clinton Keeler had one. For Davids, Glen McCready, Marc Versage and Jeffrey Gunn had the goals'and Jay Fletcher pitched in with an assist. Jamie Clarke and Heather Tredway played well in goal for their teams, There were two Novice H.L. games played last Friday (P.D. Day for public school sltudents) Remax got a good perfor- mance from Shane Norton who scored five goals plus an assist to lead his team to an 8-3 win over Van Camp. Shane scored four of his goals in the first period. Other marksmen for Remax were Alex Dell with one and Tyler Wooten with two. Tyler also had three assists. For Van Camp, the scoring was spread around three players: Aaron Chambers, Blayne Kinnu- nen and David Gainey. Game Two thai afternoon was a bit closer with Davids and IGA battling almost down to the final buzzer. Davids prevailed by a score of 5-4, but for th the IGA diy the game could quite easily have gone their way. For Davids, Jay Fletcher got the winner later in the third. Other scorers were Scott Harper and Heather Tredway with two each. For IGA, a team improving all the time, Jason Heyworth and Barry McIntyre scared two of the oals. The score sheet does not ve the names of the other two goal scorers, but they wore Nos 18 and 5. - In a Novice House League game played October 24, Van Camp Contracting edged Port Per- ry Printing 4-3 with Gavin Baxter netting the winning. goal late in the second period. VAn Camp jumped into a 3-0 lead with three unanswered goals in the first period. Ryan Puckrin, with assists: to Blayne Kinnunen scored twice and Blayne counted one himself, un-assisted. : The Printers were not out of this game by a long shot and they came roaring back in the middle period with three of their own to tie the match. PP.LIONS 1 This game saw the Lumbermen dominate the shorthanded Lions Club. Stewart Bruce with the assist going to Jason Hopkins got the Lumbermen off to a fast start in the first period. Whenever the Lions got close to scoring the hot -goaltending of Ian Johnson was there to close the door. Jamie Trick also had a strong game in net for the Sons but it was only a matter of time before Scugog took over the tiring Lions who on- ly had 2 reserves on the bench. Matt Bengel finished off a nice 3 'way passing play - with Matt 'Brown and Jon Jamieson to up Scugogs lead to 2 goals. With just under 1 minute to play in the se- cond Jason Hopkins scored assisted by Stewart Bruce. Mat- thew Phillips on a nice effort scored for the Lions to get them back in the game but were unable 'to beat Ian again. Then with just under 2 minutes left in the third Jon Jamieson scored assisted by Stewart Bruce to round -out the scoring. . : : Tripp Realty 5 Gord Lewis Motors 2 This game saw the first place Tripp club take on the stuggling 'Motormen. Matt Phoenix opened the scoring on a nice end to end rush. With Lewis scrambling around Steven Cockrane picked ~ up a loose puck and beat Kyle McClymont who was having a good game to make the score 2-0 at the end of the first. The second period saw Tripp score 2 more goals. The first by Steven Cockrane assisted by Matt Phoenix then Matt Phoenix unassisted gave Tripp a 4-0 lead. Michael Leeming making his first start in net for Tripp came up with great saves to keep Lewis off the score board. Lewis got on the board with a great solo effort by Jason Vader. Then just over 1 minute later Justin Wooton unassisted scored for Lewis to get them back in the game. These 2 goals seemed to give them a lift as they kept the pressure on Tripp but were unable to get any closer. Matt Phoenix scored his 3rd of the game to help Tripp to their 4th ~ straight win. Saturday, October 29th Scugog Lumber 5 Whitby Auto Wreckers 1 This game saw the Lumbermen pick up their 2nd win of the weekend. Jason Brown assisted by Steven Hiemstra give Whitby the early lead. Jon Jamieson unassisted scored to tie up the game then with the first period coming to a close Jason Hopkins assisted by Stewart Bruce gave the Lumbermen a 2-1 lead. Michael Balmforth making a rare - start for Whitby in net and the ever steady Ian Johnson for Scugog kept both teams from run- ning the score of this fast paced game. Jon Jamieson Scugog's big gun scored the next 2 goals. Matt Brown assisted by Matt Bengel scored for Scugog to help seal the victory. Port Perry Lions 2 Gord Lewis Mators 2 : This was the most exciting game so far of the season. Both teams came out flying after both lost their games on Friday. Each team took turns putting extreme pressure on each other but only great goaltending by Jamie Trick for the Lions and Kyle McCly- mont for Lewis kept the game close. Terry Jellicoe unassisted got the Lions on the board. Scott Swain playing his first game for Lewis fed a great pass to Chris Vandmeer to tie the score at 1-1 in the first. The second period saw both teams play great hockey on- ly to be stymied by both goaltenders and by the goal posts. Both teams kept up the pace in the third period but came up with the same results until Justin Wooton scored for Lewis with just 2 minutes remaining in the game. With under 1 minute to go, it was looking like Lewis was finally to get that 1st win. Terry Jellicoe picked up a loose puck' at the Lions blue line, - shook off 2° checkers and scored to tie the game. The difference in the game was. Consumers Gas constantly back - checked and were not caught up ice. There was ex- 'cellent Mo work and good goal "tending by Mike Tripp for Con- sumers and Greg Rankin for Big V. The teams played a scoreless first period even though there were a tremendous amount of shots. Kent Jamieson was the on- ly marksman for the game scor- ing all three goals in the second for Consumers. The first and third goals were unassisted while the: second drew assists from Jason Phillips and Tim LePage. Scala 3 Emiels 0 This game saw excellent goal + tending from James Patterson for Scala and Mike Pashley for Emiels. Sean Gawley opened the scoring for Scala on a nice rink wide pass from Kevin Ellis. Emiels had good scoring chances ~ but couldn't put the black rubber between the pipes. Mike Leach has learned the secret, stuff the puck between the goalies legs and you're bound to get two goals and that is exactly what he did. Close games in broomball It is a good year for broomball in Port Perry. There are no - predetermined games this year with a number of upsets and all other games being extremely close. In the first game of the day, - Utica Farm Equipment scored twice in the first period with both goals going to Chester Down. Assists went to Ken Fraser, Dan- ny Taylor and Ian Down with two. B and L Donut's goaltender, Glen Archibald, kept them in the game with numerous outstanding saves but B & L failed to get on the scoreboard as they lost by a score of 2-0. The first period of the second game was scoreless as Goreskis met up with Emmerson's In- surance. Keith Young was - assisted by Larry Maarse a as they gave Goreskis the lead. Neil Woodrow assisted Tino Molica in the insurance goal that gave Goreskis the 2-0 win. The final game saw the Blackstock Merchants open the scoring against the Oddfellows when Gord Bryans scored unassisted. The Oddfellows scored 3 unanswered goals in the remainder of the first period. The goals were by Scott Heard and Mike Mole who added two knot- ches to his broom. Assists went to Dale Lown, Brian Robinson and Dan McKee. In the second period, Blackstock fought back when Bil- ly Pratt blasted a Gord Bryans pass into the net. All of this was to no avail as the Oddfellows went on to record the 3-2 upset win. J.D.
