" poin new facility in old church When Joan and Kevin Pilk- ington took a drive through Port Perry one day last summer, little did they know it would lead direct- ly to a new business venture. For the past seven years, they have been operating the Stone- moor Day Care Centre in Ux- bridge, and on Monday of this week, they welcomed the first children to their day care centre of the same name in Port Perry, lo- cated in what used to the Pente- costal Church at the corner of Queen and Rosa Streets. About 20 youngster were reg- istered on Monday for the first day, and Mrs. Pilkington said she exepcts that number will increase over the next few months to the licenced capacity for 60. "There is a demand for day care in Port Perry," she told the Star last week. She noted that when they opened the Centre in Uxbridge, they started with five children. Now they are 70 and more on a waiting list. She and her husband really had no intention of opening a Centre in Port Perry, but when they hap- pened by chance to be driving along Queen Street last summer and saw the "for sale" sign on the lawn of the church building, they agreed it was an excellent location for day care. After inspecting the building, they found it almost ideal for con- version to day care, including the fact the zoning was in place. The offer to purchase was made and accepted and about four weeks ago, they began the neces- sary renovations to meet the li- cencing requirements, | These included washrooms, kitchen facilities for hot lunches and snacks, a partition to divide the main floor into play areas for: younger and older children, the ad- dition of large windows for the lower floor-and constuction of an outdoor playground. Stonemoor in Port Perry will accept children from 18 months to 10 years, and is open five days a week from 6:45 AM to 6:00 PM. There are three full time and three part time staff members presently under the direction of su- pervisor Darlene Comer, a Sdn ate in ECE from Seneca College. The program is a structured . one offering music, arts and crafts, learning activities and play times.
