Taking the pets for awalk BEST AVAILABLE COPY means soaring to 600 ft. When most people take the family pet for a walk, it's a lei- surely stroll around the block. When Bill Lisham takes his "pets" out for some exercise, they soar 600 feet above the fields and rolling hills south of Port Perry. - "i Bill's "pets" are a dozen Cana- da Geese, and since last May, he has worked many hours training them to fly alongside his ultra- light aircraft. ** Whenever the winds are calm, ughally early morning or evening, Bill calls the geese from their pen, rolls his ultra-light from the small hed and taxis down the grass run- way on a field near his home at urple Hill. % It's quite a sight to see Bill in "bird-like" ultra-light bumping i$ way down the runway with a pzen full grown geese runhing longside. #5 When the ultra-light lifts off the ground, the geese take flight, and fall into formation around the e-made aircraft. 1 Bill takes the craft to about 300 feet, levels out, and the dozen birds are never more than a few feet away, cruising along at about 0 MPH, the wind whooshing over their powerful wings. 4: More than a few people have RIDE program working Durham Region Police con- oe the RIDE program to be yorking when they don't make Fy arrests for drinking-driving of- ©" That's what happened last Thursday night (Sept. 29) in Port Perry when the RIDE program stopped nearly 200 vehicles from 10:00 PM to 2:00 AM at the in- ersection of Water Street and Highway 7A. Bill said recently he gets a great kick out of flying with the birds, but-his project has a practi- cal side as well. He's in the pro- cess of preparing a film, and hopes to be able to sell it for viewing on television. Bill believes he is the only person in Canada to have geese trained to fly with an aircraft. How did he do it? A lot of pa- tience and a lot of hard work. ~The training actually began when the geese were still in the egg. A taped recording of the sound of the ultra-light's motor was played to the eggs before they hatched. Once the geese were born last May 15 and started to walk, Bill walked with them, again playing the tape of the ultra-light's motor. Pretty soon the geese would follow him everywhere. But would they actually fly behind the ultra-light. That ques- tion wasn't answered for about eight weeks. From simply walking with the tape recorder, Bill soon had the geese running behind the ultra- ight as he taxied up and down the runway. About eight weeks after the ecse were born, they were ready or flight. Bill took the ultra-light down the runway, lifted off and was "amazed" to see the geese take to the wing alongside him. They were flying, and they have been flying together ever since. Actually, this is the third group of geese Bill has attempted to train to fly with him. He said the diiference this time, is that he stuck strictly to the sound of the ultra-light. The other groups would follow him on - his motorcycle, but they would not take off with the aircraft. The geese respond to the sound of the motor, but they have also come to know Bill's voice. The geese fly very close to the ultra-light, often within arm's length. Bill modified the plane so that the prop is directly behind the seat to rule out any chance one of the birds would get caught up in the blades. "I am a little apprehensive about landing with them so close. By I haven't run over one yet," he said. {GREAT PRICES! GOOD SELECTION! "Of Outgrown Family Clothing! Get a Jump on Winter! (except holidays) Back in July, Bill took his ul- a-light and the 12 feathered riends to an air show in Sudbury, where they were supposed to make "their public debut." ' But overnight, somebody slipped the latch on the pen and all 12 geese disappeared. : Bill asked the local radio sta- tion to help him find the lost geese. And they started to show up all over the eity, in backyards, in the parks. Bill spent most of the day tracking them down and eventually all 12 were recovered. But they missed the air show. In preparation of the film for television, Bill captures them in flight using a hand-held video camera. He is now getting ready to edit the film, put together a sound track with music, and he hopes the final product will be finished by the end of the year. Bill, who lives on the Shirley Road south of Port Perry, and works as an artist-sculpter, has a reputation for creating unusual things. Last year, for example, he built an exact duplication of Stonehenge out of wrecked cars. His Autohenge, which still stands on a hill top off the Shirely Road was used in a commercial for new He has built a giant stainless steel salmon for a town in New Brunswick, a huge tower for the Vancouver Expo, and metal drag- ons for Wonderland. One of his first projects was an exact replica of the lunar land- ing module. He gets a kick out of taking the trained geese out for a fly- around, observing them close-up as they wing their way through the still air.
