Letters Affordable homes To The Editor: development. I would hope if we Tower second candidate 'to run on Scugog Island We wish to enlarge upon your reporting of our recent ap- pearance before Scugog Council on behalf of Oak Meadows Hous- ing Development. Firstly, over 80 per cent of the people wishing to build in Oak 'Meadows are residents of Scugog Township and they wish to stay in Scugog area. Secondly, since the development is immediately butting the main Oshawa-Port Perry road it is a convenient location and close to town. I feel Councillor Cochrane was most unfair in ever suggesting Oak Meadows will be "a slum development". I dare say when it is completed Councillor Cochrane would be proud to know a relative of his lives in Oak Meadows. We have stringent restrictions which will keep the quality of the homes in good order but we are not plan- ning on building mansions. We are looking for people who wish to build family size affordable well finished homes. In effect we are wishing to develop a family community. Our appearance at Council was to attempt to persuade Council not to spend taxpayer's money in hiring planners, solicitors, con- sultants and so on to try to prove we are not putting out a good are ever to provide affordable homes for our young people we must first provide affordable building lots. This is what Oak Meadows will be doing. I hope the taxpayers of Scugog realize that if affordable housing is not pro- vided they will have to continue to subsidize more of the Govern- ment built housing which is a long term liability on the taxpayers. Further, most young people prefer to own their own home rather than live in a SUBSIDIZ- ED GOVERNMENT owned home. As long as Scugog Council con- tinues to hold up development and cause an artificial shortage of building lots for homes, this high cost of housing will continue in Scugog. Because of this our young people suffer badly because of the high debt which they must carry to own a home. Mr. Editor, I want to thank you sincerely for the opportunity of enlarging on our approach to development in Oak Meadows and to reassure yourself and the citizens of Scugog that the development will be a fine quali- ty family oriented community when finished. Yours very truly, Doug Wilson, Oshawa. N. of Hwy. 7A) 985-0111 A second candidate has offi- cially jumped into the race for Ward 3 (Scugog 'sland) seat on Township council. Jim Tower, 43, a resident of Concession 9 for the past 14 years, joins Allan Goreski in the hunt for the seat vacated by Don Cochrane. Mr. Cochrane, who has held the Island seat for the past two terms, has announced that he will be seeking the area council seat in the November elections. Mr. Tower, who operates his own contracting business, J and A Services, told the Star last week that some of the concerns for Ward 3 residents include water quality of Lake Scugog and the supplies of well water. He stressed that if elected, he will make a strong effort to listen to the concerns of his constituents and "respond to the input I get from the people." As for Township wide issues, he feels Scugog must "go after the Region" to at least start looking at ways to, increase the sewage treatment capacity of the Port Per- ry lagoon system. He suggested that one way of increasing the capacity, which is now at maximum, is a treatment facility for the discharge which goes into the Nonquon River. Mr. Tower said that expansion of recreation facilities is needed and the in-coming council must start planning for this. He sug- gested a two to five year frame- work for new facilities at the Are- na site. He also feels the new Town- ship council must address the problem of parking in the down- town core of Port Perry with the co-operation of the merchants in the area. This will be Mr. Tower's first attempt at elected office, though he said he thought seriously about running in the 1985 election. At that time, he was working as a national sales manager for a heating controls company and the job did not give him enough time to devote to municipal duties. He began running his own business full time about a year ago and said he now feels he has -" ST the time to spend on municipal business. He said he will be running a listen to the people type of cam- paign and he's looking forward to the challenge of the election. Originally from Nova Scotia, he moved to Toronto in 1963 and then to Scugog Island in 1974. Mr. Tower and his wife Nor- ma have four children, including twins, ages 14 to 17, MYERS CASH & CARRY ( BULK FOOD & DAIRY STORE 1 --2 Great Weeks of Savings -- Red Maraschino CHERRIES $3.95 Ib.
