Viewpoint (From page 7) | think the only way Canadian athletes will ever come close to the medal count of the Soviets is to copy them. Build a huge athletic complex up on the shores of Hud- son Bay (completely indoors of course) with tracks and fields, swimming pools, ice rinks and so on. Pick the Olym- ic team two years prior to the Games and then take the ath- etes to this out-of-the-way training complex and work them seven days a week for two years. No contact with outside world, no jobs or schools to wor- ry about. Bring in the best coaches for six month stints at a time and demand a complete and total two year commitment from anyone who wants to wear the Canadian colours at the Olympic Games. Give them all $100,000 cash (collecting interest in a trust fund for the two years) and as an added incentive, put Up dotters, big dollars for every medal, like $1 million for a gold. I'm stretching things a bit, of course. But it would be an interesting experiment. Frankly, | don't think there is any | other way for a small {Bobujation country like Canada to compete and win against the best from the world. Let's face it, our medal output in both Summer and Winter Games in recent years has been woeful, aside from a few flashes of true brilliance from a very few individuals. It would never happen, of course. But it is an interesting concept: combine total training and commitment with large financial incentives. | understand the Eastern Block coun- tries have really sweetened the pot for their athletes by of- fering cash "bonuses" for medals, paid in American green- backs, which go a long way in downtown Smolensk. RARER AAAANAAS | I've heard that a few people around town cringed a bit when they opened our special edition last week and saw photos of themselves taken way back when. : Me too. | have had a fair amount of kidding over the "then and now" photos of myself in that edition. Yes, folks that really is me way back in 1971, complete with beard. What you may not know is that the 71 photo was taken about a week after | started to work at the Star office, and | had fpaned up my appearance considerably to start the new job. : - | was just back from several months tramping around Eu- rope, and you talk about a beard and long hair. | guess times and people change in 17 years. What scares me is that | may still be here 17 years hence. What will the then and now photos look like in the year 2005? : BR anh FURNACE FINANCING FOR ONLY $32 95 PER MONTH INCLUDES: ® Absolutely no interest ® Installation and Taxes ®2 year Service Plan ® Deluxe Burner ® [ife-time Warranty PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, September 27, 1968 -- 9 DYNAMIC DAYS SEASON-END Sui CLEARANCE lima, ON PRESSURE TREATED LUMBER PRESSURE TREATED 1" x 6' FENCE BOARDS PRESSURE TREATED LUMBER (per lin. ft) 5-ft. 99 2" x 4" --_-- / 1% || 39°) 59 82° 79° DIMENSIONAL SPRUCE LUMBER 8-ft. | 188 ge 4% (Ld 10-ft. | 93 gee geo goo 12-8. | 29 47 67 | 10% 14-1t. | gs gee ogee ne ge ee. | §2 | 6° | 8% [18% EEE SYA [ERY WOOD LN MOULDINGS WEATHERSTRIPPING pif (Priced per lin. ft.) 10% NIH Casing 24° Bee J 24 Colonial 2 0 ¢ B39 | 3" Base 3 4° y £3 3 39 Ba Joolnial Paint grade moud'r:gs.
