FEBRUARY The Port Perry Star won second pris for General Excellence in the 966 annual newspaper competi- tion sponsored by the Ontario Weekly Newspaper Association. Dr. D.C. Christie, local veteri- narian, has within a short period detected rabid animals in both Reach and Scugog Townships. Anna Forder and Richard Ste- phens brought great honour to their home town, when they cap- tured the Canadian Junior Mixed Title Championship in Peterbo- rough. It was decided that 97 pupils from three schools in Scugog Township will join with the pu- pils of the Port Perry Public School. MARCH Three hundred chickens perished in a fire on the farm of Mr. Hugh Strong, Reach Township. One hundred thirty five new tel- ephones were installed in Port Perry in 1965. Port Perry Intermediates won the Lakeshore Intermediate "C" Championship by defeating Little Britain with a score of 9-2 in the Over 100 merchants and their employees attend a special sales banquet sponsored by the Port Perry Star at the Port Perry Legion Hall. She is the first lady president in the organizations history and possibly one of the very few women who has held such a postion in Canada. Mrs. M. B. Dymond was re- elected as president of the Port Perry Hospital Auxiliary for the 12th consecutive term. Other members of the execu- tive are Mrs. Don Crozier, treasurer; Mrs. Roy Cornish, vice-president; Mrs. Storey Beare, 2nd vice-president, Mrs. B. Wanamaker, secretary, Mrs. S. Mumford, press and correspondence and Mrs. Manns, bootee convenor. Reeve, J. J. Gibson was re- turned by acclamation at a nomination meeting held at the Municipal Office, Decem- ber 2. Also returned for anoth- er term were John Orde as Deputy-Reeve and school board members Bill Williams, Merlin Dowson and Albert Cawker. There was a very small turn- out (25%) for the election of three councillors in the De- cember 11th municipal elec- tion. Elected to council for 1964 were Ivan Parkinson with 324 votes; Bruce Beare with 296 votes and Bob Kenny with 284 votes, all of whom were councillors in 1963. Cornish Public School" in honour of the princi- pal, R.H. Cornish on his retire- ment after 34 years of service in this position. A Cannington girl, Mrs. Mari- lyn Beatty was chosen Ontario County Dairy Princess at the Brooklin Spring Fair. One hundred fifty persons at- tended "Meet the Champs" Ban- quet held in honour of Anna For- der and Richard Stephens and the Ontario Intermediate "C" Champi- ons in the Legion Hall. The first "hole in one" at Sunny Brae Golf Course was recorded, when Ken Moore drove a ball off the tee on the 150 yards 6th hole. Two hundred friends and rela- tives pay tribute to R.H. Harold Jackson return to Port Perry after residing in Union, New Jersey for 3 years. Joel Aldred, a well known T.V. personality and a native of Port Perry accepts the position of chairman for a Fund Raising Campaign for the local hospital. AUGUST The Port Perry Star awarded third prize in the annual Canadian Weekly Newspaper Association's Contest. Ten-year-old Shelley Olsen, Prince Albert and Jane Den Boer, R.R.2, Port Perry are winners in the Elmer Summer Safety Con- test. SEPTEMBER Over 1,200 students were en- rolled in Port Perry Schools when the doors opened for another year. D.C. Madsen, Barrie becomes the new proprietor of the local I.G.A. store. Over 8,000 attend the annual Port Perry Fair, which makes it another record. William S. Bradford takes over duties as principal of the R.H. Cornish Public School. Public School enrollment in Reach was 732, an all-time high. OCTOBER Port Perry population increased by 123 to an all-time high of 2,625. Mr. James Purvis receives 50 year Masonic Certificate in Wyn- yard, Sask. NOVEMBER Children from the R.H. Cornish Public School and the Prince Al- bert Public School collected $267.27 for UNICEF. Eight night school classes start at Port Perry High School. Triplet calves were born on the farm of Mr. and Mrs. George Ir- win, north of Greenbank. Valedictorians at Port Perry High school were Barbara Holtby and Dianne Mairs.
