PETER HVIDSTEN Publisher Much of success of Star attributed to dedicated staff Much of the success of the Port Perry Star over the past 25 years is due to the loyal and dedicated staff mem- bers who have worked for the paper. Although not with the Star now, but very instru- mental in the growth of the paper through the 1960's & 70's, were Bill Harrison and Bruce Beare, both long-time members of the staff, who left following the sale of the Star's commercial printing department. Presently there are five members of the staff whose accumulated years represent over 85 years with the newspaper. Tops on the list of long-time employees is Annabell Harrison, who will complete 25 years on staff this year. During the twenty-five years Annabell has been on staff she has been involved in various aspects of the business. From the early days when she hand folded and gathered pages, in a hot, gloomy shop; to the present where she takes on the duties of the Star's chief dark- room technician, and assorted other jobs. Next on our list of employees with long service is office man- ager, Gayle Stapley, with 16 years. Although Gayle's years at the Star have not been con- secutive (taking a break to raise her children) her knowl- edge of all aspects of the busi- ness help to make it run smoothly. Starting as a part- time employee in 1969, she now heads a five person office staff. John B. McClelland first came to the Star in 1971, and left following one year in Port Perry. In 1976 he returned to take up the position of Editor of the Port Perry Star and he has now completed a total of 13 years. In charge of our important advertising department is an 11 year veteran with the Star, Valerie Ellis. Valerie started in advertising following her college training, and has been here continuously since 1973 (with time out for two chil- dren). Pat Webster capably handles the duties of advertis- ing sales representative for the Star and has now been here one and a half years. Cathy Olliffe, is the Star's feature and news reporter/ photographer and has now been with the paper for five years. She contributes not only to the news columns, but writes her own column each week. In the front office, Anna Gouldburn, with three years on staff, is in charge of ac- counts as well as helping with other office duties; and work- ing alongside Anna in the bookkeeping department is Judy Ashby who has just com- pleted one year. Also on the front lines in the office is Kathy Dudley, with three and a half years of ser- vice. Kathy is in charge of the extensive office supply de- partment in addition to other office duties. Not all of the work is done in the front office, and in our production room we have two very capable typesetters, working on producing the ma- terial for the Star each week. rudy Empringham heads up the Star's typesetting team with 2 1/2 years service along with Janice Arksey who has just recently joined the staff. Part-time help at the Star include: Heather Jones, a sen- ior student from Port Perry High School, who assists with front office duties; and Nancy Hvidsten who works in various capacities.
