Fire department boasts new truck It's been a long time coming, but as far as the men at the Port Perry Fire Hall are concemed, the latest piece of equipment is well worth the wait. Last week, the Fire Depart- ment took delivery of its Emer- gency Rescue Vehicle, and Chief Jack Cook said it is the latest in state of the art technology. In fact, the new vehicle, which was built to precise specifi- cations spelled out by the Fire De- partment, is the only one of its kind in the country. The vehicle was ordered 14 months ago. It is an International cab and chassis powered by a V8 Diesel motor. It carries five firefighters in safety and comfort. The cab is equipped with a special rack which allows firefighters to get their portable oxygen tanks on while en route to a fire or other emergency. And it contains large storage areas for all the equipment used by the department, including the ex- trication gear for freeing victims of car accidents. The specialized equipment in- cludes a front-end winch and a small gas motor to drive the hy- draulic extrication gear which has saved the lives of numerous acci- Som victims trapped in their vehi- cles. The new truck replaces the de- partments 1974 rescue van, which 1s no longer large enough or func- tional enough to meet the needs of the department. Building from the cab and chassis, the storage boxes, the special equipment, the lighting package, the radio, loud hailer, even the the triple mode siren, were installed by P.K. Welding of Oshawa and Dependable Emergen- cy Vehicles of Brampton. Though the truck now is one of a kind in Canada, that will soon change. Apparently, mem- bers of the Missassagua Fire De- partment like the specs so much, two similar units were ordered for that department. The cost of this new vehicle was $122,000. Chief Cook said it will serve the needs of the local Fire Department for many years to come.
