AGENT, BORELI _ Sept. 15, 1870, LIA P. 0.--REAOH, 2, 1966. The Observer, listed as the Official Paper of the County was being published at this time by Henry Parsons and W. Robin- son from the Victoria Block. Un- til the Port Perry Standard came on the scene, it was the only newspaper in the immediate area. THE PORT PERRY "STANDARD" There has been placed in our hands the prospectus of a week- ly paper, to be published at Port Perry, bearing the above title. In politics the publisher proposes to observe a strictly neutral and 'independent' course, commit- ting himself to "no side," merely "reserving the right of comment- ing on the various questions which may arise, and reproduce extracts from the press generally bearing on both sides of topics under consideration." It was scarcely necessary to preface the above declaration, with the statement, that "the country is now in a state of quiescence," it was equally unne- cessary to plead that "quiescent" state as an apolgy for taking "no side" in politics. The publisher has already occupied a position on two political sides since he made his appearance in this vi- cinity, and as a change appears to be necessary, he has no alter- native but to.take rank among the non-descript clan, of whom "it has been said "they are neither fish, flesh, nor good red her- ring." It would be exceedingly diffi- cult for Mr. Mundy, after hav- ing borne the Tory colors for Mr. M. C. Cameron, and, until lately, subsisted on his bounty, and went nearly frantic in his exertions for the Conservative party, while he controlled the Uxbridge Advocate, to come out boldly and profess an instanta- neous conversion to the opinions of his new friends, the support- ers of Mr. McDougall. By all means let the transition be grad- ual. Take "no side" at present, but by and by throw off the en- cumbrances, emerge from the chrysalis state, and appear be- fore the world, a polished prose- lyte, a full fledged and ardent radical, and truly represent the opinions of your matters. We are informed that "as an advocate of all that is calculated to advance the interests of Port Perry and vicinity, the Standard will identify itself with every measure and every individual, earnestly devoted to the same." The avowal is indicative of a broad and comprehensive policy in local affairs. No measure shall be neglected, or unsupported, that originates in Port Perry. Every individual who has the good fortune to reside within its limits, will find himself "identified with the advocate of home interests." But beyond the lines which bound the village, we must believe, from reading the Prospectus, the Standard is not to be advanced. "The visual ray which girst him round Is the world's extreme" public whether the Standard is Reform, conservative, or "nothing," if the narrow policy is pursued in conducting the jour- nal, which is indicated in the Prospectus. We believe the Messrs. Paxton and Bigelow are the proprietors of the Standard. Correspondence Uxbridge, Aug. 5th, 1867. To the Editor of the Ontario Ob- server MR. EDITOR,-- Being requested by the innocent and ususpecting females mentioned in connec- tion with the "unfortunate acci- dent," in your last issue, (Ob- server) which occurred on Sunday, the 14th inst., (my wife being one of the innocent and unsuspecting), and feeling my- self.somewhat interested in re- gard to reports now in circula- tion; I consider I have a sufficient reason, or excuse for correcting or contradicting the statements made in your paper of the 25th inst., touching the open violation of "all the laws of God and man. In the first place, allow me to use the language of one who is and was perfection. "Let him that is without sin cast the 1st stone." Now, Sir, it appears by the ac- count given in your paper, that some evil-disposed person or persons (whoever your infor- mer or reporter was), felt in- clined to make a mountain out of a molehill, for the crime was no greater than taking a walk in a wood or grove on Sunday, and where will you find a per- son who would not do so if an opportunity offered! I think, Sir, there are very few persons who would not commit the great sin if possessing any degree of gal- lantry, and being entreated by the ladies so to do, which was the case in this instance. By the ladies' direction, allow me to say, Sir, that the account given in your paper of the 25 inst. is a tissue of falsehoods or misrepresentations from begin- ning to end. It is true that one of the young ladies, through care- lessness, was the receipient of a cold water bath, and much to the credit of the very gentleman who accompanied them, and to whom such reference was made in your last issue, lost no time before jumping into the water to rescue the young lady, and as- sisted her to the side of the steamboat where she was taken on board by my wife and a young gentleman accompanying them, without undergoing the numerous "sinkings" represent- ed in your account of the affair, and without any overturning of the boat. Now Sir, fair play is a jewel, and the ladies interested are bound to have it. I am, Sir, &ec., A LOVER OF FAIR PLAY Uxbridge, July 29, 1867. © ----
