Many local people involved Fair Homecraft winners Each year there are new ex- hibitors in the Homecraft Section of the Fair, and this year was no exception. It is good to see so many of our local people taking part. Even with the extremely hot and dry summer there was an oustanding exhibit of flowers at the Port Perry Fair. Grace Bajema won the Honeydale W.1. Special for most points in the Cut Flowers Section, and also, the Scugog Island W.1.'s Special for the most points overall in the Flower Section. Alice Turcotte was the winner of the Greenbank Garden Special for the best potted plant and Ann Julia Bajema won first prize for her Thanksgiving Table Center Special sponsored by Analda Nursery. In the Domestic Science, win- ners for the many specials were: J.M. Schneider Special for apple pie was won by Eileen Slute; for the chocolate cake Kelly Dezan; and for the plain butter tarts Mary Lou Carnochan was the winner. Durham Region Cream Pro- ducers Special for the Light Layer Cake, the winner was Penny Pet- typiece, the Raisin Butter Tarts winner was Mary Lou Carnochan, and winner for her Chocolate Brownies was Dorothy Lee. The winner of the Decorated Single Layer Cake Special, sponsored by Hank's Pastries was Wendy Davis. Dorothy Lee won the Mother Jackson's Open Kitchen Special with her Ham and Mushroom Quiche. Dowson's Valu-Mart Special was won by Penny Pettypiece for her Grand Champion Rhubarb pie. First prize in the Fry's Cocoa Family Favourite Dessert Special was a Chocolate Pie exhibited by Deirdre Earle, second prize going to - Grace Bajema for her Chocolate Cake and third prize to Susan Berrey. The Willowtree Or- chard Special for fresh Apple Pie was a favourite for exhibitors with 14 entries. 'The first prize winner was Christina Prentice, second going to Penny Pet- typiece, and third to Dorothy Lee. A new Special 'Farm Pro- ducts" was offered this year, sponsored by Bob Prentice's Barber Shop. First prize for White Eggs was Gord & Jill Postma, for Brown Eggs was Kelly Dezan and for Maple Syrup, the winner Christina Prentice. The "Extra Special' sponsored by the Port Perry Loyal Orange Lodge for the Dark Fruit Cake was won by Catharine Short, Christina Prentice getting second prize, Dorothy Lee third place and Shirley Cummings fourth prize. In the Canning Section, first prize in the Bernardin Special was Miss Alice Dodd, with Janet Vernon receiving second. For the most points in Canning, Christina Prentice received the prize donated by Armour McMillan. In the Senior's Section, Margaret Pascoe received two firsts, one second and one third for her exhibits, Helen McKean and Dorothy Lee each won two firsts. The Grand Champion Quilt was won by Marilyn Martin of Newcastle, with Muriel Gibson winning the Reserve Champion prize, and runner-up going to the Enfield U.C.W. Gift Certificates awarded by Brock's Dept. Store was won by Helen Heard for the highest total points in the Knitting & Crocheting Classes. Helen McKean won a one year Gift Subscription to the Butterick Catalogue and the Vogue Patterns for the Ladies' Dress Special, as well as a Gift Certificate for the most points in the Sewing Section. The Honeydale W.I. prize for most outstanding article in Em- broidery went to Pat Symons. The Daisy Fabrics Gift Certificate for the most outstanding article, us- ing new fabric, in the Needlework Section went to Alice Carnegie. The Lillian Smith Memorial Special in the Crafts & Hobbies Section was won by Ann Julia Ba- jema. The winner of the Sears Gift Certificate for highest total points in the Needlework and Crafts & Hobbies was Helen McKean. The Displays by Organizations Section was won by Scugog W.1., with Greenbank W.1. winning se- cond prize. The 1-Hour Photo Special for "Special Effects" in Photography was won by Darlene Coulton, se- cond to Alissa Lee, and third prize to Valerie Freeman. The Ron King Auction Service Special goes to Valerie Freeman winning the first prize, Rob Taylor getting second, and a tie for third prize going to Cindy Rudkin and B. Sue Douglas. The winner of the Lillian Smith Memorial Tray for most points overall in the Homecraft Section was Kathy Hewitt of Omemee. Durham Holstein Club's 50th show The 50th consecutive Holstein Show was held September 8th at the Orono Fair. Exhibitors parad- ed 96 head before the watchful eyes of Judge, Robert MacDonald. For the second year in a row, the Grand Champion was Ridgefield Warden Patsy, a 5- year-old shown by Peter Hooge- veen, Blackstock. Reserve Cham- pion was another Warden daughter, the winning 4-year-old entry of Ralph Warren, Port Hope in McCall Warden Natasha. Junior Champion was December Warden calf shown by Willdina Holsteins, Bowmanville and Reserve Junior Champion honours going to Frank Barkey, Blackstock with a Senior calf, Altona Lea Rosalea. Other class winners included: Summer Yearling, Willdina Hols- teins on Willdina Star Olive; Junior Yearling, Keith Van Camp and Doug Werry on Wyndee War- rior Beth; Senior Yearling, Willdina Holsteins on Willdina Mattador Lily; Dry Cow, William Tamblyn on Tamlane Majest Holly; Junior two-year old, Frank Barkey on Altona Warden Shirley; Senior two-year old, Frank Barkey on Altona Lea Matt Teresa; three-year old, Willsona farms on Willsona Maple Wendy; Mature Cow, Frank Barkey on Altona Lea Sheik Leanne. Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor Awards were won by Frank Barkey with runner-up go- ing to Willdina Holsteins in each category. Breeder Herd was won by Willsona Farms. Ridgefield Warden Patsy was also declared Best Udder for Peter Hoogeveen. A total of 96 head were exhibited by 17 exhibitors.
