- robes plot ed SA su MolJacks re-build "around strong It has been a short summer for the Port Perry MoJacks. Fourteen weeks to the day af- ter the team played its final game on a hot afternoon in May, train- ing camp for a brand new season opened Sunday evening at the Scugog Arena. The team, of course, is com- ing off its most successful season ever in Junior C competition; a season which took the MoJacks to a Central League championship, a memorable series victory over the Hanover Barons and a berth in the 'all-Ontario Junior C champion- ship. The MoJacks came up short in that final, losing in five games to the Mooretown Flags, but in the process the team won many new fans and garnered a great deal of interest in the fortunes of the green, white and gold. But that page has been turned, the memories tucked away (but not forgotten) and there will be some changes for this coming sea- son. Under new head coach Mel Brown, the team hit the ice for the first time Sunday night with 30 players in camp. MoJack director of hockey op erations Murray Parliament told the Star he was "a little disap- pointed" in the turn-out Sunday evening, but he expects more players to show up this week as the tcam continues its two-hour work-outs on Tuesday night. Junior B squads will be mak- ing cuts this week and that should bring some players out. . With the loss of several players (over-age, university, etc.) Parliament agrees that 1988-89is going to be something of a re- building year. But he's quick to point that he likes the strong nucleus around which the team can build for the coming season. At least ten players who saw action last year with the MoJacks are expected to be back, and Par- liament is very enthusiastic about the chances of several members from last year's all-Ontario BB Midget squad. Members of last year's Mo- Jacks who are expected back this season include John Hartford, Sports Land 985-2174 ATHLETIC SHOES Basketball, Tennis, Golf, Baseball, Soccer, Jogging, Aerobics, Squash & Casual Wear. Port Perry Minor Softball | group of players John Harman, Steve Ashby, Greg Warriner, Len Giacalone and Thane Ellis on the forward lines. On defense, Steve Fountain and Chris Edmonston were out Sunday night. Dave Sims is ex- ted in camp this week, and hil McBride and Steve Connors, who played with the Midgets and saw action late season for the Mo- Jacks are also out with the team. The MoJacks lost both goal- ies from last season, Brian Tarle- ton and Paul Goreksi. But six net- minders were in camp Sunday evening, and team officials will be taking a careful look at all of them, Parliament said he expects to start sighing players this week prior to the first pre-season game which is scheduled for Sunday af- ternoon (Sept. 25) It will be in Newmarket against the Schom- berg Junior squad. The MoJacks will wrap up the pre-season schedule with a game in Ajax on Sept. 29 and then back home on Oct. 2 against the Axe- men with faceoff at 7:30. First regular season game is Tuesday, October 11 in Madoc, and the first home game at' the Scugog Arena is Sunday, October 16 with the Ajax Axemen. The Central Junior C League this coming season will have a completely re-vamped format. The divisions have been done away with in favour of a 40 game schedule for the 11 teams. And what should make for an interesting change is that only the top eight teams will qualify for the playoffs. Mel Brown is the new head coach for the squad, replacing George Burnett who is coaching this year at Seneca College. Garnet Warriner will be back for another season with Brown be- hind the bench, and former Mo- Jack Brian Stevenson may also be working with the team. There is no question that this will be a re-building season for the MoJacks, but with the nucleus of strong players plus some out- standing propects from the Midget ranks in Port Perry , fans are go- ing to see some great hockey over the next few months.
