-- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, September 20, 1968 -- 13 Red Cross (-- prime | CONCRATULATIONS hurricane | victims The Red Cross is setting up drop-off points across Southern Ontario to collect relief supplies for victims of one of history's worst storms, Hurricane Gilbert. The storm has devastated Jamai- ca, one of Canada's favourite trav- el destinations, leaving thousands with no shelter or food. Bedding, canned goods and cash donations are being accepted by the Red Cross at three drop-off centres in Toronto, but according to Olive Evans, president of the Uxbridge Red Cross, more centres will be set up throughout Ontario in thesnear future. | Scugog residents who want to ; help out are encouraged to contact the Uxbridge office at 852-7712. All chartered banks across the country are also accepting tax- deductible cash donations. Cheques can be made out to the | Jamaican Hurricane Relief Fund. The Red Cross is also accepting inquiries from Canadians regarding relatives who may be in the hurri- cane zone, It is a tradition for this organization to become involved in such disasters--the Red Cross | was also responsible for putting relatives in touch with victims | when Barrie was hit by a tornado. As of last Wednesday, Mrs. i! 'Evans said details about the Ja- maican tragedy were sketchy, as organizers were relying on infor- mation from ham-radio operators. - She did say, "The devastation is horrendous. It hasn't let up yet." PER HVIDSTEN, SR. J. PETER HVIDSTEN The staff of the Dort Derry Star would like to take this opportunity, Deter, to extend our sincerest congratulations and best wishes on this special occasion. Fund set for Myrtle | Station | family A community assistance fund has been organized for a Myrtle Station family who lost almost all their belongings in a fire Sep- tember 13. The large two-storey home of Hans and Marion Dickhoff was badly damaged in the fire which broke out shortly after the noon hour. The house is located just south of the station in Myrtle, and the family hopes to be able to ren- ovate and repair the damage in time to move back in by Christ- mas. The couple have six boys, ages three to. 16, and there is now an urgent need for donations of clothing, furniture, appliances or cash. Anyone wishing to help can drop off goods at the Immaculate Conception Church office on Highway 7A in Port Perry or at Siggies Custom Meats on the west side of Highway 12, just south of Myrtle. Mrs. Dickhoff was at home with her youngest child when the fire broke out. They escaped with- out injury. Members of the family are now staying with friends in Myrtle until they can move back home. Damage to the interior of the house was extensive and house- hold items such as furniture and clothing were destroyed by smoke and water. We know and appreciate how much this 25th Anniversary means to you personally, and we know how much effort and time you devoted to the preparation of this Special Anniversary Edition of the Port Derry Star. It is a fine edition, a fitting way to commemorate this occasion. All of us who work at the Star wish you many more successful years as publisher of this newspaper. a Ag +g gg gen Sr gl ~~ ir Sat" gr. i a ur Ua + iF Again, our congratulations for the past and the present and our best wishes for the future. | | er -- ma So = gpg Ne Nein ea
