2 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, September 13, 1988 (From page 1) man, and Shirley Robson, a for- mer president of the P.C. riding association, stressed his ability to communicate with people "at the grass roots level." He was critical of what he called "bureaucratic red tape and the size of the civil service" at all government levels. He said the function of gov- ernment is to do for people "only what they can't do for them- selves." He was a gracious loser. The moment the results were an- nounced, McLean moved to Ste- venson to offer congratulations he pledged to "throw my sup- ind Ross." PON Durham is a new riding, tak- ing in Newcastle, Scugog, Ux- bridge and portions of North Oshawa and Whitby. Incumbent MP Allan Law- rence is stepping down after the Ross wins up-coming election, and he hinted Monday evening that Prime Mini- ster Brian Mulroney will make an announcement this weekend on the date of election. He predicted it will be No- vember 17. While Ross Stevenson was the clear winner of the nomina- tion, Conservative riding officials were jubilant at the size of the crowd that turned out for the meet- ing, a clear indication that the par- ty plans to fight to hold this rid- ing for the Tories. The Liberals have already nominated Doug Moffatt, a Ken- - dal resident who works in Toron- to. Mr. Stevenson lives in Udora, north of Uxbridge on the farm that has been in his family for six gen- eration. He has been working re- cently in Toronto as a consultant. He and his wife Elaine have three children. Cutline correction The cutline under a photo on page ten in the September 10 edi- tion of the Star contained incorrect information. The photo showed horse and wagon competing in the Roadster division at the Port Perry Fair. It should have said the team is being driven by Russ Uncles for owner William A. Malcolmson of Bar- rie. Our apologies for the error. School enrolment (From page 1) grades one to six. Port Perry High School prin- cipal Ted Morrison said the enrol- ment this year of 1080 is "virtually the same as last year," though he added that figure could change over the next couple of weeks with late registrations. A hole was cut In the roof of the garage to allow the truck exhaust to escape. Jim had a police escort to lead him along Queen Street, Lilla Street, the Oshawa and Shirley Roads. But needless to say, the going was slow. Friday September 30th While the very word "blood" sends chills up and down the spines of many people, it also spells LIFE for every man, woman and child on this planet. With this in mind the Kinsmen and Kinette Clubs of Port Perry are sponsoring a Blood Donor Clinic on Friday, September 30, 1988 at Port Perry High School. The clinic will take place in the school's Gym 'C' for students and staff from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.; and the general public from 4:00 to 8:00 pm. Blood Clinics in Port Perry are not a new thing, although in past years, turn-outs have been a little disappointing. Last year, one of the best in recent years, only 130 pints of blood were collected. In comparison the small com- munity of Sunderland, just north of Port Perry, collects over 300 pinis of blood at each of their clin- ics, and are rated as one of the highest per capita blood donor communities in Ontario. SB AVE ¢ in a recent interview that this year the Kinsmen and Kinettes are go- ing to go "all-out" to try and reach a very conservative goal of 180 pints of blood. To encourage more people to participate and donate, there . be three "challenge trophies" u for grabs. Each of the ell will be calculated on the percent- age of le, members or em- ployees in the group taking part. The first of these is a challenge for students and teachers. Students Give the Gift of Life! Kin Dave Robinson told the Star must be 18 years of age (or 17 . with parents permission). Second is a challenge to local Service Clubs; and the third is the Corporate challenge (for compa- nies with 15 employees or more). Your blood donation takes only a few minutes, but it can mean a lifetime for accident victims, indi- viduals facing serious medical op- erations or a cancer patients. Why not give the "Gift of Life" on Friday, September 30th when the Red Cross Blood Donor Clinic comes to Port Perry.
