He's the new principal at Cart- wright High School in Black- stock, taking over the duties from Jim Musselman who spent four years there. With an enrolment of just un- der 100 students CHS is the smallest high school in Ontario, and possibly the smallest in the entire country. For the past two years, Mr. Fawcett was vice principal at Hen- ry Street H.S. in Whitby, where there were over 1300 students. A resident of Oshawa, he was vice principal at Eastdale Colle- giate for four years, a position he shared with Jim Musselman. Since learning of his appoint- ment to CHS last June, Mr. Faw- cett said Mr. Musselman has spent a fair amount of time talk- ing to him about the smallest high school in the province. He said he is looking forward to the opportunity for the closer personal contact with students at a much smaller school. "I think the key for me will be to get to know all the students So the natural beauty of your exterior woodwork -- doesn't fade in the sunlight -- isn't damaged by maisture -- isn't hidden personally," he stated. Along with his duties as prin- cipal, he'll be teaching accounting at the grades 11-13 level. He's a former director of business at Eastdale Collegiate, and has taught a credit course in account- ing at Durham College for the past 15 years. He plans to contin- ue teaching at Durham one night per week this year. Originally from northern On- tario, Mr. Fawcett took his B.A. at the University of Ottawa and his Master of Education at Queens in Kingston. He and his wife Pa- tricia have a son in university and a daughter in grade 13 in Oshawa. ¢ has been a high school coach for both football and hock- ey, and when asked if he might or- ganize a hockey team at CHS, he aughed and said anything is pos- sible. He is a strong supporter of hockey at the high school level and believes that more and more schools will putting teams on the ice over the next few years. CHS, which first opened its doors in 1925, has a well deserved reputation for academics and con- sitently graduates a large percent- age of students who go on to post-secondary education. Mr. Fawcett said last week it appears as if the enrolment this term will be between 85 and 90 students, and he's encouraged by the fact that there will be 27 at least in grade nine.
