PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, August 30, 1988 -- 35 Cache of 40 year old magazines HR Dave and Marle Maynard found "buried treasure" in the walls of their Caesarea home when they started renovating. Within the walls they discovered more than 20 mint condition magazines dating back to the late 1940's. See story for details. Denture Therapy Clinic JOANNE DEKKING, D.T. 1330 Ritson Rd. N., Monday to Saturday (Ritson at Taunton) 236-9888 Oshawa, Ont. L1G 626 Insulation these days just isn't as interesting as it used to be. The pink stuff with the flamin- goes on the cover may have a fine R-value, but it's hard to sit down and enjoy a bat of fibreglass. In the 1940's, insulation wasn't as efficient as it is now, but geez, it's tough to beat the attraction of a good Life magazine. Just ask Marie and Dave May- nard, who found more than 20 mint-condition magazines in the walls of their Caesarea home. They bought the Centre St. house, which is actually a reno- vated cottage, April 22 of this year and just recently have started more renovations. When originally built, some- time in the late 40's or early 50's, the structure was much smaller than it is now. Over the years var- ious owners have added rooms and even a full basement. It was while Dave and Marie were in the process of ripping and tearing out walls in the original part of the house that they discov- ered a secret cache of magazines. Probably used as insulation, - most of the magazines are dated 1948, although there are several from 1947, 1949, and even a few in 1950. Almost all of them are in mint condition--fresh white pages with nary a rip, scratch or dog-eared corner to be seen. Naturally, Dave and Marie (who also happen to be newlyweds) were surprised and thrilled about the find. "We were kind of looking for papers in an old house," Dave says. Marie adds, "No, we were look- ing for money!" Most old houses contain various treasures in their walls. Some people have found old newspapers, others have found bottles, while some lucky folks do find cash. The Maynards, however, are pretty content with the magazines (they also found an old empty suitcase, which they threw out, and a squirrels nest). Most of the magazines are Life, but there's also hunting & fishing periodicals, a 1947-48 Fall Ea- ton's catalogue, a Vogue, and a Modem Screen featuring on its cover a 19 year old Shirley Tem- ple with her new baby. Dave's favourite magazine is an October '48 "Picture Show", a pre-Playboy girlie book featuring page after of page of skimpily dressed young women frolicking on beaches and such. He also uncovered a 1950 Cana- dian Statesman, which actually had a birth announcement for one of his friends in it. There's also a Toronto Evening Treasure found in walls Telegram, dated September 4, 1948. The headline reads "Big 4 Reach Berlin in Accord" and the front page picture features Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands, who gave up her throne on that day. More than likely, the large stack of reading material contains many gems the couple hasn't uncovered yet--it's hard to find time to read when you're in the midst of major renovation. "I really haven't had a chance to go through them--I've been too busy," Dave says. For now, they're going to stash the magazines safely away for fu- ture reading, but ultimately, they're not sure what they're going to do with them. One thing's for sure, they won't be used for insulation. Face painting comes to Port Perry Fair Coming to the Port Perry Fair for the first time ever! Face Pain- ting!
