-.- N mT --TT ---- Port Perry team wins Kawartha tennis matches Congratulations to the Port Perry Tennis Club Kawartha Team! Beth Charles, team cap- tain, happily announced our team won the Rhys Williams trophy. The Runner-up team was the Nautilus Fitness and Racquet Club in Peterborough, followed by Fenelon Falls and Lindsay, in that order. Playoffs start this week, with Lindsay coming to Port Perry this Thursday even- ing. For exciting tennis come on down to the courts and cheer our team on to yet another victory. The club held it's second 'fun' tournament of the year, organiz- ed by Georgia Brock, Dick and Sally Martin, on Civic Holiday Monday. Despite a wet start from Mother Nature, the courts were cleaned off and play began at 11 a.m. Flowers and balloons adorn- ed the courts as approximately 30 people slugged the ball through the heat. A pot-luck lunch was en- joyed by all. At the end of the day Brian Shanley emerged as Top Man and Riet Orde claimed the prize for the Top Lady. Dick and Sally were responsible for the prizes and this was a tournament where everyone went home a win- ner, as everyone won a prize! That's the kind of tournament we Ladies, grab your racquets and head on down to the courts Wednesday mornings. Beginning at 10 a.m. you can enjoy round- robin play. Organized by Cathy Reese, she guarantees a morning of tennis, comradeship and fun. Come on down to the courts this Saturday and watch the Junior's Tennis Tournament. This tourna- ment, organized by Rebecca Kahn, is always an exciting event as we see these young people play their very best. Just think, our club may well produce the tennis stars of the future, so come and cheer these young players on! Many of our junior players have been involved in league play out of town and winning many games. More information will be for- thcoming in next week's column. The Men's and Ladies' Doubles Tournament follows the Junior's Tournament on August 27th. Then the Singles Tournament takes hold in September. More informa- tion on both these events will be imminent soon. On the lighter side of tennis, 'kids are pint-sized human beings who, by virtue of their parents' wealth, play a heck of a lot better tennis at twelve than you did at all like. any age!' Mites softball team earned another victory on Monday, August 1, as they defeated Valu- Mart 10-8. Michelle Moynham pit- ched well in two innings; Graig Sheedy, in his first outing as a pit- cher, also did very well and managed in the third inning, to take down three batters in a row. Special mention should also go to Cory Raines, who had a great night at the plate with a couple of doubles, and Shane Norton, who solely completed a double play as he caught a fly ball and caught a runner off second base. The highlight of the game, however, came in the third inning and will go down in baseball history as one of the most unusual occurences in the game. Jamie "NOW OPEN?* Trick of the Norton team was crossing home plate when he was beaned with a ball blazing in from the field. He's fine and, despite the surprise, was safe at home to count for one of Norton's 10 runs.
