Durham College has an- nounced the appointment of Gary Polonsky as president effective this September. Mr. Polonsky, 47, replaces Mel Garland who is stepping down after more than eight years as president of the only Commu- nity College in Durham Region. Mr. Polonsky has a solid background in community college education, starting in 1967 at Confederation College in his home town of Thunder Bay, Ont., where he taught and later served as chairman of several departments including math, science, trades and technology. In 1981, he worked for three years as vice president of program development at Lakeland College in Alberta, and his most recent position was as president of the New president at Durham large Red River Community Col- lege in Winnipeg. At a news conference at Dur- ham College last week, board chairman Robert Fair said the search for a new president took more than seven months, and a re- view of over 100 applications. Mr. Polonsky, who won't of- ficially take over at Durham until September 26, told the news con- ference he will be setting specific goals once he settles into the job. However, speaking in general terms, he said there is a continu- ing need for what he called "partnering" of the college with industry and the community. And he said he will stress hu- man resources- communications, motivation, recruitment. The weekend came to a stir- ring end Sunday afternoon in Palmer Park as a very large crowd turned out to hear the sounds of five pipe and drums bands and see the colourful display of highland and Scottish dancing. As has become the custom for Festival Days, the Chamber of Commerce will continue with the British theme next year. As far as the Chamber of Commerce is con- cerned, the Festival Days weekend is an important money raiser for other events during the year. "We should be all right (finan- cially) but I won't know all the exact numbers until the end of this week," said Mrs. Jones on Monday morning. Although there is no way of keeping accurate counts of the number of people who attend Fes- tival Days, causal observations suggested there were a lot of peo- ple in town from Thursday even- ing through to Sunday afternoon. And they seemed to be having a good time, which is what Festi- val Days is all about.
