Tractor pull excitement this weekend Blackstock and Area News by Joyce Kelly Once again the village is gear- ing up for the annual Tractor and Truck Pull which will be held this coming weekend, Friday and Saturday evenings beginning at 7 p.m. sharp. Noise, dust and ex- citement will be the trademark of this unique sporting event. Plan to join the crowds that come from many points in the area. Blackstock is growing rapidly with the development of Werry Lane, a new subdivision on the west side of the village. Greensboro Drive has been ex- tended through to Church St. and has now been completed to a fine condition. Several new houses are being built now with plans for several more to appear during the summer. Herb and Betty Wright of Ames, Iowa, first cousins of Walter and Lloyd visited relatives in the area last week. On Sunday morning the com- bined congregations of Blackstock and Nestleton United Churches held the annual Outdoor combined service at the beautiful home of Harold and Eileen McLaughlin. A quintet of Eileen McLaughlin, Shirley Gibson, Jean Ferguson, Glenn Larmer and Ross Ashton favoured with two impressive numbers. Both Dale Davis and Richard Choe gave short sermons on their childhood and their impressions of Canada 'Day. All in all it was a most im- pressive service. Quite a number remained to enjoy a picnic lunch and a social time together. On Friday night a large number * of area residents of all ages en-' joyed the Canada Day progamme and Fireworks display at Port "Perry. What a fascinating exhibi- tion of lights in such a beautiful setting. Happy Birthday, Canada! On Wednesday evening the Graduation exercises of the Cart- wright Central Public School were held beginning with a delicious chicken dinner prepared and served by the members of the O.N.O. at the Blackstock Rec. Centre to the Grads and their parents. After dinner the group moved to the school where grandparents and friends joined for the presen- tation of the diplomas and prizes. The Grade 7 Band played for the Procession and for the singing of O'Canada. Jody Logan acted as the capable Master of Ceremonies for the evening. Remarks were given by Trustee Joyce Kelly and Principal R. Rutledge. Jennifer Lee gave an excellent Valedictory Address. Marion Reitano won the English Award. Mathematics was won by Kerry Williamson while Joelle Priebe won both the Science and Geography Awards. Sarah Anderson won the Geography while Marion Reitano took top honours in French. Tanya Mappin and Leslie MacKenzie shared the Music Award. Jennifer Lee received the Art Award from Mrs. Pickering after which Mrs. Lush presented the F.W. Unit 1 Science Award to Sue Kyte, Randy Gardner receiv- ed the Award for the Unsung Hero while the Nestleton Women's In- stitute Writing Award was won by Matt Willets. Miss Rensink presented Julie Strong with the Graduation Virginia Frew daughter of Don and Norma Frew, R.R. 1, Nestleton, graduated from Sir Sanford Fleming College, Peter- borough, Ontario on June 18th, 1988. She obtained a diploma in Tourism and Transportation- Travel Merchandising. Virginia is a graduate of Cartwright High School, Blackstock and is now employed at Marlin Travel, Port Perry.
