Squirts in tournament On June 18, the Rep. travelling Port Perry Legion Branch 419, Squirt played three games in the Pickering Tournament. The team was placed in the 'A' Pool Divi- sion playing against Thornhill, Malvern & Richmond Hill. Port Perry Legion team has only one major player from last year's team and balance of the team is first year players with five minor players. The first game was against a strong major Thornhill Hill, however, Port took an early 1-0 after the first inning and by the end of the game Thornhill's bats had driven in 14 runs to Port's 3. Billy Zaparaniuk pitched three in- nings allowing nine hits and Scott Heasman pitched two innings allowing six hits. First baseman Kenton LeFort played steady. Third baseman Brent Harper played a very strong game and for his efforts he was voted MVP. Game two was against Malvern who had previously beaten Port by a large margin at the beginn- ing of the season. Ricky Olaison went the distance allowing 12 hits. Again Port took an early 2-0 on a triple by David Bourgeois with Craig Laird hitting a double and Steve Gilbert a single and after one inning, Port was up 2-0. By the end of three innings, the game was 4-4, unfortunately, Port could not put any more runs across and the final score was 104 favour Malvern. Third baseman Jeremy Geer and shortstop Paul Linton played a strong game as did 1st baseman Craig Laird who receiv- ed the MVP award. Mike Mitchell and Matt Morris displayed solid outfielding and made numerous good throws. After the second game, two players from each team for a total of 16 players took part in a gold glove competition. A ball was pit- ched from a pitching machine at various speeds and any player missing a catch was then eliminated. Port's players were Jeremy Norton and Brent Harper and both players played well in front of their teammates and fans (parents). Unfortunately, Jeremy Norton received a very sharp bail which hit him above his eye and fortunately did not hurt him too seriously. At this point he was the fifth last player. Brent Harper was still in the competition and thanks to his glove work WON the Gold Glove Award. He received a new Louisville Glove. Good work Brent. Port's third game was against Richmond Hill who had lost 4-3 to Thornhill in extra innings. Port's Jeremy Norton made a nice bunt to start things off and K. Lefort made it to third base with Steve Gilbert driving in Norton to give us a 1-0 after one inning. By the end of the second inning, Rich- mond Hill was up 3-1 and after three innings the score was 4-3 in favour of Richmond Hill. After four innings, the score was still 4-3. In the fifth Port had runners at second and third with two out. Brent Harper hit a very hard ball between first and second and it appeared the game was going to be tied but Richmond Hill's se- cond baseman threw himself in an attempt to keep the ball in the infield. Unfortunately, he came up with the ball and made the throw to first base to retire Port's - chance of tying the game. Billy Zaparoruik pitched the distance allowing seven hits. Jeremy Nor- ton made numeroiis catches in centre field and in fact threw out a runner from third base. For his efforts he was voted MVP. Special mention to Rick Olaisen Gamblers duck the rain drops The weatherman refused to co- operate with the Greenbank Gamblers this past week as both their scheduled games were washed out. The game scheduled for Mon- day Night in Scarborough against the Toronto Ambassadors was cancelled by The Beaches League Executive when severe storm warnings were issued for the Scarborough area. On Wednesday night the Gamblers versus Oshawa A.C.L. at Durham Fields was literally flooded out as Oshawa was hit with a real downpour. So the week was a total loss for the Gambler team and these cancelled games will be rescheduled at a later date. The good news for the Gamblers came on Thursday of this week when word was receiv- ed that the Greenbank Squad was invited for the second straight year to compete in the Bulova Watch Tournament at the C.N.E. This Monday night sees the Oshawa A.C.L. team visiting Greenbank Park with the Gamblers travelling to Port Perry on Thursday night to tackle the fast improving XL Eagles. 4-H Achievements At the recent 4-H Achievement program for the 4-H Encounter the Outdoors and the Farm Safe- ty Club, several 4-H Members and Leaders received honour awards.
