18 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, June 28 1988 A Pig & Whistle style show Pearly Queen at Barley Mow Pub Remember the Pig & Whistle Show? How can anyone forget the brash breeziness of the colourfully dressed entertainers, the warm, folksy atmosphere, the singing, and the flowing British ale--even if was on the telly? If you enjoyed the TV show (and who didn't?) you won't want to miss the Pearly Queen Pub Show, Saturday July 16, at the Barley Mow Pub (Latcham Cen- tre) during Great Britain Festival Days. Anita Scott, who will be the featured performer at the Barley Mow, was the Pearly Queen for a decade on the Pig & Whistle Show. Dressed in elaborate se- uinned dresses, and flamboyantly eathered hats, she has toured across Canada with a number of variety shows and is in big de- mand for conventions. She recently entertained 1,200 lady Shriners at the Royal York Hotel and received two standing ovations. During the Britannia Show held at the CNE a short while ago, she did four shows a day for capacity audiences. She also entertains at the London Pa- vilion of Toronto's annual eight day Caravan and the London, Ont., equivalent each September. Together with Ken Stanley, mu- sic director for the Pig & Whistle Show for the entire run of the show, Anita Scott is sure to dazzle a sell-out crowd in Port Perry. The pair will be performing two 45 minute shows starting at 8 p.m. Admission is $5 to those 19 and older. No advance tickets are available--first come first serve, so get there early. The Latcham Centre, at the lakefront in Port Perry, will un- dergo a complete transformation during Great Britain Festival Days. A tremendous, authentic pub bar will be shipped in, along with keg after keg of British suds, for all that "ale's" you. The building it- self will be rated so much you might not even recognize it--if you don't, the smell of all the English "pub grub" being sold from noon all day long (Friday and Saturday) will surely help your nose find the way. Cornish pasties, Scotch eggs, steak pies, sausage rolls (bang- ers!), pickled eggs and the infinite- ly famous "Miss Vicky's Chips' will all be for sale at the Barley Mow (can't you just taste it right now?). You can treat yourself to this mouthwatering pub grub almost anytime Friday and Saturday, but if you want to catch the Pearly Queen herself in action, it's best to be at the Barley Mow right at 8 p.m. on Saturday. On Friday night, July 15, the doors of the pub will open at nine for a rousing dance, with music Good paying jobs available at Festival Days fitness display If you're 18 years old or more, if you'd like to make some cold hard cash during Festival Days-- but don't want to be too far away from the fun, there's a job just right for you! The Canada Fitness display needs 20 people to help run its mammoth operation (that stretch- es from Queen St. to Mary St. along Water Street) for 54 hours of work during Great Britain Fes- tival Days. And the pay's not too shabby either. Each person will be paid $285 for their work--which shouldn't be too much work at The display, which is geared mostly towards kids and runs free of charge, will be set up Wednes- day July 13 and will run from Thursday moming at 10 to Sun- day morning. An ingenius selection of activ- ies will keep youngsters occupied for hours with everything from tennis, golf, baseball, softball, football, hockey, to swivel lad- ders, I-beams, and hand-over-hand cables. As a result, the Canada Fitness display is very much in demand all over this country, and the or- ganizers of Festival Days were ex- tremely fortunate to be able to ob- tain it for Port Perry. Parents, however, won't want to miss any of the action, so to make both groups happy, a Nan- ny Service is being run by the Durham Region YMCA on Queen Street. On Friday evening, from 6 to 10 p.m., registered babysitters will be at the 'Y' to look after little tykes with games, crafts and snacks (while their parents are out enjoying adult activities, like the Medieval Feast!). The charge is only $2 an hour, but book your time now--only so many spots are available. On Saturday the Nanny Service will be "drop-in", from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. No booking is necessary, and again, the kids will be kept occupied with lots of fun activi- ties. For more information about the service, or to book for Friday night, call 985-2824.
