a ------ Scugog Township council will be meeting with reps from the Provincial Highways depart- ment to work on the installation "of traffic lights at the intersection of Highway 7A and the entrance to the Port Perry Plaza. A recent letter from Transpor- tation Minister Ed Fulton states the department is willing to con- sider permission to install. lights at the intersection providing sever- al conditions are met. The provincial government will not pay for the installation or their up-keep, or any re- construction of the highway or the entranceway. In fact, the plaza méychants pay more than $25,000 annually to off-duty OPP officers to direct traffic during peak hours on Friday evenings and weekends. It is not known when the meeting with Transportation offi- cials will be held. Members of Township coun- cil met with the Minister on this matter back on April 28. Motorcyclist hurt A 17 year old Blackstock teen- ager suffered only minor injuries in a serious motorcycle/car acci- dent June 17. Durham Regional Police say the crash happened at 5:45 p.m. when a 1983 Suzuki driven by Chris Delong of Blackstock, was struck by a car driven by William Ab- bott, 60, of Seagrave. The bike was eastbound on Queen St. The car was headed north on Caleb, crossing Queen onto Cochrane St. when the acci- dent occurred. Mr. Delong was treated at Port Perry Hospital for minor injuries. Councillor Graham told the Star after the new pact had been ratified by both sides, that he was hopeful an agreement could be reached on Monday. The council does not have a regular meeting for another three weeks, and coun- cillor Graham said that had an agreement not been reached on Monday, the strike might very well have gone on for a long time. Council went "in-camera" Monday morning and discussed the strike for over an hour before agreeing to ask for another bar- ganing session. Mr. Cherry and the bargaining committee for the employees then met with council for about 90 minutes before reaching an agree- ment. The $2600 wage increase across the board (retroactive to January 1) represents pay increas- es for the 11 inside workers rang- ing from 13 to 23 per cent. Their salary range before the settlement was between $10,900 and $18,200. A couple of other matters were also settled Monday. The Union agreed that the Township can designate one position to be outside the bargaining unit, and the council agreed to a standard "no reprisal" clause against the employees who were on strike. They will be seeking a new contract for January 1, 1989. The strike was an orderly one.
