On April 20, council voted 17 to 9 to delay passage of the bud- get for a further two weeks, and the reason is garbage. As of April 20, Durham was not sure if the Metro Toronto council would agree to rebate the Region $28/tonne for Regional garbage dumped at the Metro op- erated landfill site in Pickering. If Metro does not agree to this rebate, it will cost Durham an ad- ditional $2.7 million in dumping fees this year, and that will add about four per cent more to the average Regional tax bill. If Metro gets the rebate, the Regional tax bill will increase by about 7.3 per cent. A Metro Toronto council committee has reccommended that Durham reccive this rebate, but the full council has yet to approve that recommendation. But that recommendation for the rebate may be approved soon, as last week, Durham council turned down a request from the town of Newcastle to fight any move by Metro to locate a new wii Ya wd FJ JEWELLERY & TANNING INC. 263 Queen St., Port Perry 985-8555 a TANNING SALON -- REPAIRS -- CUSTOM JEWELLERY 985-8647 garbage dump there. Also, at the same meeting last Ajax councillor Jim Witty withdrew a controver- sial resolution calling on Durham not to allow any Mctro garbage in this Region once the large Brock West dump is filled in about two years. This means that a Durham Region resolution of three years ago is still on the books, calling for a joint effort with Metro to find a new garbage dump. With the Regional budget still sitting in limbo for another two weeks at lcast, Durham CAO Don Evans warncd that some de- partments urgently need the mon- ey ear-markced in the yet to be ap- proved budget. And he said, if "budget is not approved soon, council may have to approve parts of it so the the departments can get on with their work.
