HOWSAM, Air Vice Marshall George Roberts, Companion of the Bath, Military Cross, passed _ away peacefully April 16, 1988 at his home, 2040 Pauls Terrace, Victoria, B.C. in his 94th year. Born 1895 in Port Perry, Ontario, married in 1918 to Lillian Somer- ville (predeceased in 1970). Sur- vived by his wife Marion Isobel Garrett, one son, Peter Somer- ville Howsam of Raleigh, North Carolina; four grandchildren, Gary of Toronto, Jeffrey of Col- umbia, South Carolina, Valear of Richmond, Virginia and Karen- Irish of Greenville, North Carolina; several nieces and nephews and three great- grandchildren. Howsam, a First World War flying ace, shot down thirteen planes 5 probables and was wounded twice. During a long and distinguished military career in the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Canadian Air Force, was awarded the Military Cross in 1918, the Companion of the Bath in 1945, the Legion of Merit in Degree of Commander (U.S.A) 1945, Order of White Lion (Czechoslovakia) 1946 and Com- mander de 1 ordre de la Couronne (Belgium) 1948. A Military Funeral Service was held Wednesday, April 20 at 2:30 p.m. in Christ Church Cathedral, Quadra at Courtney Victoria B.C. with The Right Rev. J. Frame of- ficiating. Cremation followed at Royal Oak Crematorium.
