JTS Cen i SHR a =p MT a re nl A---- ------------------------ LL f f Leanne Philip has done it again! The 15 year old Grade 10 Port Perry High School student has won the grand prize in the Dur- ham Regional Science Fair for the second year in a row! Last year at this time, Leanne's smiling face was featured in the Star after her project dealing with road salt, "Ice Man Comes. Ice Man Goes," earned her a trip to the Canada Wide Science Fair in Mississauga. This year, after wowing the judges last week in Uxbridge at the Durham finals, Leanne has once again won a berth at the na- tionals--only this time they're be- ing held in Winnipeg. Naturally, the petite teenager with a mop of blonde hair that hides a wealth of scientific brain power, is excited about the trip west. And it's not just the trip it- self that Leanne is so excited about. | These guys are good Meet the Science Fair stars of Scugog! All these young people performed admirably at the Durham Re- gional Science Fair held recently in Uxbridge, picking up at least one win each (see story for more Iinforma- tion). At front from left is David Talbot, Ron Rankin, Shawn Plain, (middle) David Philip, Daniel Mahlberg, and (top), Leanne Philip. Scugog shines at region fair Scugog was well represented at the Durham Regional Science Fair, held Friday April 8 at Ux- bridge Secondary School. Students representing schools from throughout the Region took part in the competition, and from a group of more than 200, judges had to pick less than 60 category winners and a few "Special Award" winners, sponsored by companies and organizations. Within that select group of win- ners are seven outstanding students from the Scugog area. Two are students at R.H. Cornish Public School, and the other five attend Port Perry High School. Daniel Milberg: 12, a Grade Seven student at Cornish, claimed first prize in the Grade Seven En- gineering category with his "Light Activated Robot." The robot project also won this . studious youngster an AEG Bayly Engineering Award. David Philip, 12, could be fol- lowing his sister Leanne's foot- steps in the scicnce department. David won himself an Honourable Mention in the Grade Seven Phys- ical Science category with his "The Heat Is On" project." David also attends R.H. Cornish. David Volman and Ron Rankin, both 14, and both students at PPHS, make up the team that won second prize in Intcrmediate Physi- cal Science with their project "Making Current With Current." Shawn Plain, 15, won an Hon- ourable Mcntion in the same cate- gory (Physics) with his project called "Soap Forum." David Talbot, 15, was awarded the David Carroll Memorial Award for his project called "Effect of Road Salt on Plants." All these students worked ex- tremely hard on their projects, and winning at the prestigious Durham Finals reflects this work and tal- ent. Congratulations all! Scientific wizard wins fair two years running If her project does well at the nationals in Winnipeg, she could win an astounding variety of mer- chandise and cash prizes--plus a possible trip to International com- petition. It's all very heady stuff, but Leanne seems pretty cool about all the attention. After all, she did do the same thing last year, and as for this year--well, she's still per- fecting the science fair project that she's been working on since July 15, 1987. That's the day she started work- ing on "Is It The Size?", the pro- ject that has won her the all- expense paid trip to Winnipeg. July! How many students are there in existance who begin science fair projects before school even begins? And not only did she start work in the summertime, she continued to work on the project practically every day once September began. So it's no wonder Leanne came out on top at. the Durham Region- als--despite the competition of 220 other students--all of whom had won top honours at their own individual schools. Her project is actually a contin- uation of "Ice Man Comes. Ice Man Goes." "Is It The Size?" is also a pro- ject dealing with road salt. Specif- ically, Leanne attempts to deter- mine the level of efficiency for three different grain sizes of road salts. So far she's decided the smallest grain sizes are most efficient, but the larger ones are more efficient at lower temperatures. Last year her project specified in detailled examination how salt melts ice on the roads, and how much is needed under various weather conditions. She said last year, that her ex- periments with salt would contin- ue over "the next three or four years" so it looks like her plans are being implemented. And not surprisingly, she is in regular contact with agencies like the Durham Region Roads depart- ment, who are very much interest- ed in anything Leanne has to say - about their winter stock in trade. Everyone at Port Perry High School is proud of Leanne, and how for the second year in a row, she has put PPHS on the regional map. Her awards include: First place in Intermediate Phys- ical Science (in this category, both second place and honourable mention winners were also from PPHS). C.U.P.E. Local 218 Award. General Motors of Canada (Oshawa) Award. She was chosen as one of the top four projects at the Fair (along with students from Duffin's Bay, Pickering and Henry St.) which means she will represent Durham Region in Winnipcg. Here's hoping her long list of credits will also include "winner of the Canada Wide Scicnce Fair." Good-luck Leanne! -- NEED PHOTOCOPIES? We can do them for you! Letter, Legal & Ledger.
