' J od La TT --_--. There's no tomorrow for the Port Perry MoJacks or the Well- ington Dukes. The Central Ontario Junior C League title will be on the line to-night (Tuesday, April 12) in Wellington as the teams hit the ice for the 7th game in this gruelling series. The MolJacks forced this de- ciding game with a 6-4 victory over the Dukes in overtime Sun- day night at the Scugog Arena. Len Giacalone got the winner with 4:38 to play in a ten minute overtime period and Kevin Long put the icing on the cake with just two seconds left when he scored into an open net. The MoJacks out-shot the Dukes 44-29 in this game and never trailed. Len Giacalone led with a pair. of goals and singles went to Dean Smethurst, Rob St, Jules, Thane Ellis and Kevin Long, who had two assists as well. Kevin McAlpine led the Dukes with two goals, and Allan Bigg kept his team in the game with some strong work in the nets. Penalties hurt the MoJacks as the Dukes scored three times on the power play, including two in* the final two minutes of the sec- ond period when the MoJacks were called for two penalties on the same play. There was no scoring in the third period and the MoJacks out- shot the Dukes 14-8. In the over- time period, they outshot the visi- tors 8-2 and clearly enjoyed a wide margin in the play. Clay Dempsey played a big role in the winning goal. He threw two hard body checks in the Duke zone, forcing a turn-over be- hind the net and when the puck came free to Giacalone in front he knifed it high into the cage. Each team took 14 minors in this game. The Dukes did all their scoring in the middle period. For- ward Thane Ellis turned in a hard- working game for the Molacks and he had a goal and two assists. GAME FIVE In Wellington on Friday night, the MoJacks lost 4-3, and there was a controversial call by the referee which may have cost the team the game. Midway through the third per- iod with the MoJacks leading 3-2 and the teams playing five-aside, Jeff McColl grabbed a loose puck deep in the Duke zone, skated in The Port Perry MoJacks are starting to get some decent scoring chances like this one In their best of seven series with the Wellington Dukes which is down to the wire. The Wellington goal judge put the red light on and the Mo- Jacks on the ice stopped to con- gratulate McColl. Even the Duke goalie knew the puck was in the net as he skated from the crease and slapped his stick on the ice in frustration. But the referee failed to blow the whistle and as the MoJacks were celebrating McColl's goal, Andrew McGreer took the puck the length of the ice and scored on a startled Brian Tarleton. Instead of a 4-2 lead, the game was tied 3-3 and the Dukes scored the winner with 6:06 to play. The MoJacks argued the call for ten minutes, to no avail. Spectators, including Wellington fans behind the Duke net, said the puck clearly went into the net, hit the centre up-right and came to rest just outside the goal post. The referee did not consult with the goal judge on the play, and even the official scorer had written a goal at 11:26 on the score sheet. MoJack general manager Mur- ray Parliament said after the game the team might consider a protest on principle, though he admitted the chance the League would change anything was virtually nil. Scoring goals that counted for the MoJacks in that game were John Harman, Dean Smethurst and Jeff McColl. Tim Channell got the eventual winner for the Dukes. The MoJacks squared the ser- ies at two games each April 6 at the Scugog Arena when they turned in a strong defensive effort for a 3-1 victory over the Dukes. Both teams appeared to be playing conservative hockey, and the game remained scoreless until 12:19 of the middle period when defenseman Rob Metcalfe broke the ice with a perfect shot to the corner of the net behind Duke goalie Dave Bunnett. Dean Sme- thurst drew the assist on this goal which came while the MoJacks were short-handed. Metcalfe is a "defensive" type of blue liner who doesn't score a lot of goals, but he picked the corner perfectly for that imporant marker. At 8:22 of the second, it was another MoJack defenseman, Jeff -- FORE GOLFERS ONLY -- SUNNYBRAE | GOLF COURSE RR 4, Port Perry DI I I I I I I SPUR Monday - All Day ...................... . McColl, who gave his team a 2-0 lead. Len Giacalone and Steve Ashby drew the assists as McColl broke across the blue line, made a move to his left and rifled a wrist shot that beat Bunnett cleanly. The Molacks had a great chance to salt the game away when the Dukes took a string of minors, but a give-away on the power play allowed Mike Maracle to slip a puck by Brian Tarleton at 13:04. The MoJacks, however, had no intention of letting this game slip away. With just under two minutes left to play, John Hart- ford, broke into the clear with Ke- vin Long and Dean Smethurst trailing. Hartford's initial shot was blocked by Bunnett but Sme- thurst jammed the puck into the cage for a 3-1 lead and the impor- tant victory. The Dukes out-shot the Mo- Jacks 30-26 in this one and Brian Tarleton played a near flawless game. He looked very confident between the pipes for the Mo- Jacks and gave up just a handful of rebounds. At the other end of the ice, Bunnett also turned in a strong game for the Dukes. The MolJacks nearly put themselves in a hole early in the game with several minor penal- ties, but they were able to keep the Dukes off the score-board. In fact, the MoJacks had ex- cellent penalty killing all game from Hartford, Long, Smethurst and Warriner, who never stopped working. Bob St. Jules, Thane Ellis and Dave Culbert also worked very hard in a checking ca- pacity in the Wellington end of the ice. | Penalties were just about even with the MoJacks taking 13 mi- nors and the Dukes an even dozen. Rob Baker and Jamie Branscombe were tossed from the game for a minor scuffle in the third period and the Dukes Dave Terpstra also got the heave in the third for com- plaining to referee Gus Bam- bridge. Other than game one in Well- ington which the Dukes won 7-3, this has been a very close serics. Four of the six games have been decided by one goal. The Dukes have scored 24 goals and the Mo- Jacks 23. Game time in Wellington to-- night is 8:30 and the winner will -earn a berth in the all-Ontario Junior C semi finals. DS J CE
