Atom A's wrap up the season The Malmont Farms Atom A's finished their season by com- peting in the Uxbridge Tourna- ment last Saturday. Friday night at home, they hosted Beaverton for an exhibi- tion game. Port scored a 5-3 win, but not before over 60 penalty minutes and 5 game misconducts had been handed out. Brent Harper set up Mike Labanovich in front of the net halfway through the first period and Mike's second try slipped in- to the corner for a 1-0 lead. Then Jay Tredway made a perfect play to Kenton LeFort on a 2 on 1 break for a picture goal. Clay Scott started the play. After Beaverton narrowed the lead, Chad Kearns and Neil Mueller worked a nice give and go breakout with Chad taking Neil's pass the length of the ice to score. Jeremy Norton picked up an assist as well. Jay Tredway then picked the top corner with a hard backhand, assisted by Kenton and Jeremy Geer. Scott Heasman "closed the scoring with an empty "getter from his own end. Steve Gilbert got the assist on Scott's goal. Saturday in Uxbridge, Port opened the action against Keswick. Scott, assisted by Jeremy Geer and then Brent from Mike gave Malmont a 2-0 lead. However, Keswick came back with two third period goals to force overtime. With empty nets, the extra period lasted only 6 seconds before failure to clear the zone led to Keswick's winning goal. Port was faced with having to beat Bolton to advance to the final. This proved to be too tough a job, as Bolton's strong squad carried off a 4-0 victory to eliminate Malmont from further play. At the conclusion of the season, it is time to express appreciation to all those who make Malmont Farms Atom A's possible. This in- cludes the coaching staff of Dave Bourgeois, Ivan Geer and Charlie Bourgeois, and also the support of the sponsors, Noreen and Neil Malcolm. Auctioneers out The playoffs have come to an end for the Port Perry Novice Auctioneers. The Auctioneers went into the second week of the series against Stouffville with the teams tied at one game each. In game three, the teams were tied 1-1 after regulation, but Stouffville managed to score in overtime. It was a tough loss for the Auctioneers who had played a very strong game. In the next two games of the series, the Auctioneers hit a real scoring drought and just were not able to get the puck past the Stouffville netminder who played very well. Both games ended in low- scoring fashion and were an indi- cation of how closely matched these season-long rivals have been. The coaching staff of Bob Spencley, Ken Parry, Murray Em- pringham and Greg Heasman worked hard with these youngsters all season and were pleased with the effort and the improvement shown by all members of the tcam. The Stouffville squad will now have the honour of advancing to the next playoff round against a very formidable Novice team from Bowmanville. As for the Port Perry Auc- tioneers, their hockey season is not quite over. The annual Novice tournament will be held this Fri- day, April 1 at the Scugog Arena, hosted by the Jr. C MoJacks. The Auctioneers will play their first game at 8:00 AM. Come on out and see these youngsters in action. DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE MISSING? Read it in the Port Perry Star Sponsored by Jr. C. In the Pee Wee Division we had Big V Drug Store and Consumers Gas advance to a final game after a round-robin series. Both of these teams were even- ly matched with great goaltenders and hard working forwards and defencemen. Big V jumped out in front on a lovely goal by Kent Jamieson with Ryan Picard and Todd Smart helping out on the play. Consumers Gas scored the next goal going into the second period. Steven Stiles was credited with this one and Mike Olaisen picked up the assist. Once again Big V took the lead when Mike Staniland shot from the point to score on a screened The annual Dowson Valu Mart Mixed at Port Perry Curling Club with two teams tied But padregate scoring gave the tro ry. Steven Stiles counted his second goal of the game when he raised the puck into the top cor- ner to cleanly beat Steven Slade. Jason Eenling and Scott Airey worked hard setting this one up. At the end of the second period and the score tied 2-2, it looked like a real battle to take place in the third. The next three goals took the victory away from Big V and placed it in the hands of the deter- mined Consumers team. Scott Airey scored the first of these on a nice rush and was unassisted. Mike Olaisen then took his turn and scored a lovely goal also unassisted. The final was the nicest of all when Kevin Brown took a pass from Andrew 8:00 AM - Port Perry vs. Oshawa Minor Bruins 9:00 AM Uxbridge vs. Pickering Association 10:00 AM - Shelburne vs. Keswick 11:00 AM - Caledonia vs. Gravenhurst Pereman and set up Scott Airey in front of Big V's goal. Scott made no mistake and tucked it in the top corner to end the game 5-2 in Consumer's favour. It was a tough loss for the Big V team who were undefeated in the round-robin but came up a bit short on this particular day. There are winner's and there are losers on the scoreboard, but when I look back over this year and see how much each of the boys and girls in the Pee Wee House League have improved and learned I think all were winners. I have enjoyed tremendously watching and learning with these hockey players and for that I say thank-you. Good luck to all in the 1988-89 season and I hope you have a super summer!
