Warm, then cold Columbus and Area News by Lorna Miller Hi, Fellow Columbites: Spring seems to be playing the flirt with us this year. One day she bathes us in sunshine, encourag- Ing us to discard the heavy coats and boots, toss the mittens and hats into storage and dance to the tune of lazy zephyrs caressing the trees: the next day she throws Snow at us carried on winds that make those samé trees chatter with cold, and sends us scurrying to reclaim the winter woolies. This past week, Ivan Wray passed on. It was a sudden blow for us all. We passed many hours chatting with him in the garage. He always had a story to tell or an opinion to express that was sometimes humourous, sometimes disparaging, but always interesting. We tended to watch for him to arrive, get the paper and stop in to let us know how he was feeling about the world, politics, human nature, sports, the weather and just life ingeneral. We did with Ivan, what we do with most people, we took him for granted. He was part of the routine. Now we're sorry that we didn't take more time to real- ly get to know him better. We'll miss him. But we're glad we had the chance to get to know him as well as we did, however, little that was in reality. Thanks, Ivan, for all you gave to us we hope that we gave something of worth to you in return. You now have the atten- tive ear of the highest authority, maybe he'll be able to act on your advice where mere mortals fail- ed you. We certainly hope so. Goodbye, dear man, see you again. - Andrea had a bereavement last week also. Her cat, Mallowbar, was run over on Friday night. She had to go out and pry his frozen body off the highway. Burial was held today in the backyard. A sad occasion attended by family and friends. Helen Broom's house across from us was singled out for a direct hit by a bolt of lightening. Andrea was watching out the win- dow when the entire house was { WOODTRECH engulfed in an eerie, other- worldly light. She was rather en- joying this phenomenon when she suddenly realized what was hap- pening. This heavenly light was beautiful, but deadly. Watching lightning electrify a house is less scary than being hit yourself, but not much. Thankfully the damage was slight and nobody was hurt. The night of cards held at the church was a rounding success with sixteen tables of enthusiastic players enjoying a good game in good company. So successful was it, that it will be repeated on Apri) 23. A chance to recoup those Spring playing the flirt! losses and have a great time. This past Sunday, Communion was held at Columbus United Church for Ivan Wray - next Sun- day we remember the sacrifice that Jesus made for all mankind and his final victory over death. Let's all acknowledge this vic- tory and join in prayer for the renewal of faith in our own lives. It would be nice to know that if they were persecuting Christians today, there would be enough evidence against us to convict us of the crime of believing what some try to dismiss as a "nice story," but certainly not relevant to our lives today. God bless and a Happy Easter to you all. See you in the paper.
