8 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March 22, 1988 Issues warning (From page 1) That was the highest total of accidents, deaths and injuries re- corded by the OPP over the Easter Weekend in the past four years. "Any traffic death is a need- less tragedy. Safe, sober driving saves lives. Anyone who ig- nores that fact puts themselves and others at risk. This Easter Weekend, the OPP will be on the look-out for the deadly drivers," warmed Commissioner O'Grady. Viewpoint (From page 5) that scrap of paper. Starting to get very panicky. Looks at watch, empties brief case contents on seat beside him, pa- pers everywhere, still can't find it, mind racing, anxiety attack setting in, go through pockets again, no scrap of paper, mind going blank, horrible vision of million dollar deal falling through for lack of a scrap of paper with a damn phone num- ber on it, totally unaware that speed of vehicle now 75 MPH. Well, you get the picture. And you thought the guy try- ing to eat a Big Mac while driving in rush hour without getting ketchup on his $600 suit is a menace on the roads. There's no way car phones will ever be out-lawed. But in the interest of the safety of all of us who don't have one, all those vehicles so equipped with a phone should have a large siign on the roof so other drivers will know enough to keep their distance. hen that guy in the "Bimmer" finally exited the Parkway at Bloor Street, he was still yapping away, and | shuddered a We as | watched the car disappear into the early evening twilight. The turmoil about amalgamating the former townships into one has calmed down, so there is no danger of arousing past hostilities. Today we seem to have more appreciation for our roots and our history than we used to. Nobody wants to go back to mowing with the scythe or raking by hand, yet we can and should value many of the things of the past. In this line, reviving some of our historical names would be a good idea. Besides, it would be a lot easier for our children to learn the wards by name than according to number. John den Boer.
