Forty-three teams from 10 communities participated in a total of 55 games in the third an- nual Port Perry Minor Hockey House League Tournament. One feature of the tournament was the awarding of "Best Ef- fort" trophies to a player from each team following every game. While the most excitement was to be found on the ice during the many excellent hockey games, there were some highlights off the ice as well. These included the 50/50 draws and the many ex- cellent prizes (NHL sticks, pucks, hats, etc.) Delicious hot meals (over 800) were served to players, coaches and fans throughout the week. The different age groups -- Tyke through Bantam -- com- peted Monday through Friday. Saturday featured the Champion- ship games in all divisions. Monday, March 14 Atom In the Elmer Lee Division, Port Perry Lions Club defeated Port Perry Whitby Auto Wreckers 5-3 to open the tournament. Best Effort winners were Derek Anderson of Lions and James Paterson of Whitby Auto Wreckers. Lions Club faced a strong Oshawa Baker Park Club in their of Lions. With their 6-2 win, Baker Park advanced to Championship play on Saturday. Port Perry Gord Lewis Motors defeated Oshawa St. Gertrude's 3-1 in the opening game of the Douglas Moore Division. Best Effort winners were Shawn Lewerentz of Gord Lewis and Jeremy Campbell of St. Ger- trude's. Bowmanville Ontario Hydro beat Oshawa St. Gertrude's 5-0 in game 2. Best Efforts were awarded to Jeremy Campbell of St. Ger- trude's and Justin Vance of Bowmanville. Ryan Polley pick- ed up the shut-out. Bowmanville Ontario Hydro captured the division title by overpowering Port Perry Gord Lewis Motors 9-1. Best Effort winners were Gord Lewis Motors' Matt Phoenix and Bowmanville's goalie Ryan Polley. Lala - -- - In the Grant Williams Division, Oshawa St. Mark's edged Port Perry Tripp Real Estate 3-2. Best Efforts were earned by Tripp's Steve Cochrane and St. Mark's Barry Crawford. Bowmanville 401 Esso then outscored Oshawa St. Mark's 5-1. Patrick Elmhurst won the Best Efiort for St. Mark's while Charlie Hargest picked up the hat-trick and Best Effort for 401 Esso. ~ Bowmanville 401 Esso won the division by slipping by Port Perry Tripp Real Estate 3-2. Best Efforts were awarded to Tripp's goalie Mike Leeming and 401 Esso's goalie Robert Staples. Charlie Hargest scored all 3 of 401 Esso's goals. In the opening game of the Charles Bourgeois Division, Oshawa Cedar Ridge outscored Port Perry Lake Scugog Lumber 7-2. Best Efforts were won by Ryan Gauvin of Cedar Ridge and Justin Wooton of Scugog Lumber. King City scored in overtime to beat Oshawa Cedar Ridge 5-4 in game two. Gerard Woloveir won the Best Effort for King City while David Marshall won the Best Effort and Shane Kelusky picked up the hat- trick for Cedar Ridge. King City clinched the division title by edging Port Perry Lake Scugog Lumber 5-4. Best Efforts were awarded to Jeff Jamieson of Scugog Lumber and Eric Levasseur of King City. Michael Baldiserra scored a hat- trick for King City. Tuesday, March 15 Tyke In game one, Port Perry C A.W. faced off against Cannington. Cannington scored early to take a 1-0 lead. The C.A.W. team fought back tc take a 2-1 lead on goals by Dillon Weber and Scott Jeffery. Cannington scored 5 unanswered goals in the second and third periods to earn the victory. The game featured swift skating by Ian Parliament, Adam Hobbs, Ben Stephenson and Alex Dell. Bryan Biffin, Tom Keeble, and Wyatt Park provided deter- mined checking. Port Perry Brook's Feed Store and Bowmanville Skylight Donuts skated to a scoreless tie in game 2 The shut-outs were earned by Corey Branton of Brooks and Nick Adams of the Donuts. Excellent checking by Jeremy Heyworth, Daniel Lee, Steven Martin, Adam Brain, and Tyler Wooton helped Corey get the shut- out. Smooth skating and puckhandling were displayed by Scott Harper and Brad Johnston. Port Perry Brook's Feeds then faced Cannington. After giving up three goals in the first eleven minutes, Brooks played shut-out hockey for the rest of the game. Good hustle by Jonathan Froats, Danny Lyons and Scott Willman; strong backchecking by David Clouthier, Chris Orr and Jonathon Reed; and quicie, forechecking by Shane Savage and Colin Mark were the highlights of the game. In the final game, Port Perry C.A.W. tied Bowmanville Skylight Donuts 2-2. Dillon Weber scored his second goal of the tournament, assisted by Ryan Moynes to give C.A.W. an early 1-0 lead. Jamie Potter scored 2 goals to give the Donuts the lead. Adam Hobbs scored on a good effort to give C. A.W. the 2-2 tie. Best Efforts went to Blair Beveridge of Emiel's Place and Matt Currie of Oakwood. Port Perry Consumer's Gas was edged by Peterborough St. Matthew's ""'B" 3-2 in double over- time in game two. Goalies Andrew Pereman of Consumer's and Mike Burchell of St. Matthew's earned the Best Efforts. In another double overtime FO rte ss ASNT? Peterborough All Saints clinch- ed the division title with a 2-1 win over Port Perry Scala. Best Efforts were earned by Blair Prechitko of Scala and John MacDonald of All Saints. In the Douglas Moore Division, Port Perry Big V Drug Store defeated Orono Kinsmen 4-2. Big V's goalie Steven Slade and Kinsmen"s Stephen Shetler earn- ed the Best Effort awards. Orono came back with a 2-1 win over Peterborough St. Alphonsus. Best Efforts were presented to Jason Mercer of Orono and Jamie Legrow of St. Alphonsus. Port Perry Big V Drug Store won the division with a 3-2 win over Peterborough St. Alphonsus. Ryan Picard of Big V and Jeff MacDonald of St. Alphonsus were the Best Effort winners. In the Charles Bourgeois Divi- Gerard Wolevelic of King game, Peterborough St. Mat- thew's "A"' beat Oakwood Agromart 4-3. Best Efforts were awarded to Oakwood goalie Brendan O'Grady and St. Matthew's Brad Tanner. Port Perry Emiel's Place grabbed a berth in championship play with a 4-0 win over Peter- borough St. Matthew's "B." Misty Andrews of Emiel's and Jesse Dunford of St. Matthew's were Best Effort winners. Greg Rankin earned the shut-out. Peterborough St. Matthew's "A" clinched the division with a convincing 6-1 win over Port Perry Consumer's Gas.
