PORT PERRY: 985-8401 AJAX LINE: 427-6903 | EIR ny 268 Queen St., Port Perry Clidmosic | Nobody Does It Better! DEAL The Grant Menzies Motors Eagles moved on to semi-final ac- tion last week after eliminating a weak squad from Belleville. Port found themselves in a little higher calibre of play with Collingwood than with Belleville. The first game of this best of five series was in Collingwood on Thursday the 17th. The game was one of sloppy play on the part of both teams but it seemed Port managed to be a little sloppier than their counterparts and as a result dropped the first contest 4-2. Still playing as if they were playing Belleville, Port went into the large arena half asleep. Strange enough Port was the first to draw blood on a goal from War- ren Geer assisted by Brad Men- zies and Clair Cornish. Collingwood then scored three back to back goals to a convinc- ing 3-1 lead and take the wind out of Port's sails. With 2:04 left in the third period Clair Cornish scored to cut the lead to one on assists by Derek Fitzgerald and Todd Taylor. Trying to tie the game up Port pulled goalie Brad Bricknell (who played outstanding in both games) for the advantage of an extra attacker but Port's power- play had everything but the power and Collingwood scored with 0:31 left to play to take the first game, 4-2. If you were not at the Scugog Arena on Sat. March 19, then you missed one of the best hockey games seen in a while. It was hard hitting, fast and nerve wracking. Fans piled into the _arena to see this contest and were not disappointed as this one was sent into overtime and what an overtime it was. Port Perry was again the first on the scoreboard as Mike Sorley banged one in assisted by John Lally and Phil McBride. The rest of the first period was scoreless and Port headed into the second ~ with a very narrow lead. It was the 9:15 mark of the se- cond period when Collingwood finally put one past Brad Bricknell who was simply (From page 1) MolJacks are waiting for the win- ner from the Bowmanville- Wellington playoff. ' There will be lots more Jr. playoff action at the Scugog Are- na, and should the MoJacks con- tinue to roll, a victory in the next Look here! LOOKING FOR A PLACE TO ADVERTISE YOUR BUSINESS? ... The play was tight and hits were hard, and fans were hanging onto their seats as the third period went scoreless which meant a ten minute period of overtime. The chants could be heard all the way to Collingwood as suppor- tive fans yelled "Eagles, Eagles" to pump up the exhausted Eagles, and believe me, it was ap- preciated. At the 7:26 mark of the overtime, it was Port who scored on a three on three opportunity, which proves to be one of Port's favourites. Derek Fitzgerald scored to make it 2-1 on assists from Phil McBride and Mark Barkey. It looked as if Port may squeak by, with a one goal win but such was not the case. The arena was estatic and you couldn't hear yourselves think as Todd Taylor planted one in the upper right hand corner to make it a 3-1 Port lead. With just 1:21 left to play in overtime Phil McBride scored with assists going to Brad Men- zies and Warren Geer. The score was now 4-1 and it looked as if Eaglemanio had it firmly locked as Port went on to score again on a goal from Kevin (Mark) Gibson assisted by Mike Sorley and Andrew Steele. In the final minute of the game Derek Fitzgerald got his second of the night assisted by Mark Barkey to make the final score 6-1. And like I said, if you weren't at the game you missed a dilly because it's not often you see five goals scored in an overtime period. The Eagles would like to say thank-you to the great number of fans, led by head cheerleader, Ryan Parliament who aided in the cheering and support as you also played an important part in our victory. oF If you missed out on this game, don't let the next one slip by, Port's next home game is at 8:00 Wednesday March 23, so come on ~ out and see Midget Hockey at it's best. Playoff fever series will put them into the all- Ontario semi finals, something no other Port Perry Jr. C squad has done in the past decade. And don't forget to take in some playoff action at the Scugog Arena and offer some support to these fine local teams.
