Port Perry, Ontario "Swallow your pride occasionally. It's non- fattening." REALTY LIMITED March 22. The topic is The Earth's Ozone Layer. The Speaker is Dr. Harold Schiff of the Chemistry Department of York University. The time of the lec- ture is 8:00 p.m., and there will be an informal discussion following - the presentation. Ozone is a fragile layer of gas in the stratosphere which protects the earth by blocking the sun's ultraviolet radiation. When man- made chlorofluorocarbons reach the upper atmosphere, some of the ozone is destroyed, allowing more harmful ultraviolet light to strike the earth. The speaker, Dr. Harold Schiff is Canada's foremost at- mospheric chemist. In 1971 he was asked by the U.S. govern- ment to be part of a task force on possible threats to the at- mospheric ozone layer posed by the projected fleet of supersonic transport aircraft. In 1974 he was asked to be a member of the U.S. Academy of Sciences Panel in the possible effects of chlorofluoromethanes on the at- moshpheric ozone layer and in 1976 became Chairman of this panel. In 1986, Dr. Schiff became the Director of the Centre of At- mospheric Chemistry at York University. There is one remaining lecture in the Science series. On Tuesday, April 12, Dr. Michael Lee, Facul- ty of Dentistry and Department of Metallurgy and Material Sciences, University of Toronto, will talk on New Developments in Biomedical Materials. Refreshments will be served in the Durham College Staff Lounge following each lecture. ounces m finn "Name the Moose Contest" || First Prize: Rhonda Frazer,41 Bore- 2 lia Cr.
