ET _.,.,-- Caesarea man races to Florida to race stock Most Canadians who go to Florida in mid-February just want to put their feet up and relax in . the warm sunshine. Not Dave Taylor. The 29-year old Caesarea resident didn't have much time for relaxing during his Florida "vacation." Dave and four friends from the Port Perry area spent their time at the track--the New Smyma Speed- way, just a few miles from famed Daytona in the heart of racing country. Driving his 88 Firebird in the "super late model stock car class," Dave finished a very respectable 12th in overall points after nine nights of racing in the World Ser- ies of Asphalt Stock Car event. Dave's been racing on the On- tario summer circuit for the last 14 years, but this was his first try in Florida where they take their racing very seriously, and many of the drivers he competed against do nothing else all year long. Out of 57 entries, Dave told the Star last week he was more than pleased with his 12th place finish (the accumulated points from nine feature races) but he would have been much happier to place in the top ten and share in the overall prize money. He probably could have had a tenth place overall finish were it not for one race where he had to quit due to over-heating. Still, Dave said his week of racing in Florida was a great learning experience, and he plans to do the same thing again next year. His goal at New Smyrna was to qualify for each of the nine rac- es, and he accomplished that. Of 'the 57 total entries, just 32 quali- fied for the evening feature race based on lap times. With the valuable experience he picked up this year both on the track and in the pits in car prepar- ation, Dave thinks he can finish in the top ten next season. For example, his pit crew of Jerry Hicks, Kevin Crosier, steve Hanlon and Dale Thomas picked up a lot of tips from other crews on how to set the car up for the 27 degree banks on the cor- ners. And they learned the hard to come completely equipped. They had to buy three sets of gears and other equipment which they had left at home. The 88 Firebird with a 355 Chev Boyd engine turned out just over 600 H.P. and hit speeds of PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March 22, 1988 -- 1 nearly 150 MPH on the straights at the half-mile oval track at New Smyrna. The banked corners were a new experience for Dave who rac- es the flat ovals during the sum- mer months at Westgate near Pe- terbrough and also at Flamboro. Dave had to take a leave of absence from his job at General Motors to make the Florida trip, and while he earned about $5,000 in prize money from the qualilrys ing heats, he said he has to re heavily on his sponsors:Jerry's Dave Taylor of Caesarea, seen here In his black Firebird, enjoyed Truck service of Manchester: good success in his first competition in February at the World Series of As- Dickson Printing in Ajax; Cran- phalt Stock Car Racing at New Smyrna, just outside Daytona.
