Rotary Club funds will up-grade Birdseye pool Port Perry's best known sum- mer water hole looks like it will open for business again this year, thanks to a hefty donation from the local Rotary Club. Birdseye Pool, in the park of the same name, will get some $24,000 worth of needed repairs and up-grading this year, with the Rotary Club picking up half the cost and the municipality cover- ing the rest. Rotary vice president Ted Blanchard told council Monday af- ternoon, the local service club will contribute $12,000 towards replacing the filter system, put- ung in a new vinyl liner and buy- Ing a solar blanket to help keep the water in the pool warm for those early morning swimming lessons. Members of council quickly accepted the offer from the Rotary Club and agreed that a similar amount will be in the municipal "budget this year for the repairs and new equipment. Members of the Rotary Club will consult with Township staff and the local Health Unit to deter- mine exactly what is needed so that the pool can open again this summer. The present filtration equip- ment is completely worn out, and the Health Unit has warned the municipality that unless it is fixed, Birdseye Pool likely would not be permitted to open this June. During the discussion with the Rotary Club members on Monday afternoon, councillor Lawrence Malcolm wondered about the possibility of a plastic "bubble" over the pool which would allow it to open earlier in the year and remain open past La- bour Day. Mr. Blanchard said such bub- bles for pools are available, but they are costly, and he doubted whether the additional use would jusify the extra cost.
