12 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March 1, 1988 _ Co-operative education is a joint effort between the high school and the business commu- nity to educate and train students. It is a career oriented program designed to give senior students the opportunity to put their theo- retical knowledge to use in a prac- tical setting. The valuable work experience obtained while going to school will help students to make a better career choice upon graduation. In order to qualify for the pro- gram, students must be in their senior years and be prepared to work regular business hours with the co-operating work station. They earn two credits toward their graduation diploma for doing the out of school work experience and the employer, or training sta- tion supervisor, takes an active role in the evaluation process. This year there are more than 900 high school students involved in co-operative education pro- grams in Durham Region. These students work for a half day every other school day for the entire school year. : All students who apply for a position in the co-op program are screened by the school co- ordinators, and employers use the normal process of resumes and in- terviews to ensure a student is suitably placed at an appropriate work station. They receive no financial renu- meration and are covered by Worker's Compensation and lia- bility insurance through the Dur- ham Board of Education. Plans are now in progress for next year's program which will start in September. See story for details. Council buys house Negotiations have been com- pleted with Mr. Phil Orde for the purchase of his Water Street home. Council was informed on Mon- day that a deal to purchase the property has been finalized and that a price of $130,000 has been negotiated with Mr. Orde. He will be allowed to live in the property until his new home is completed for up to one year rent-free if ne- cessary. Councillor Yvonne Christic ex- pressed delight at the purchase and Mayor Jerry Taylor commented "1 am very pleased. This is a step in the right direction".
