Alfred Lewerentz dies in accident A 48-year old Scugog Township man died early Monday morning when his car collided with a gravel truck at the in- tersection of Durham Roads 57 and 20, south of Blackstock. Regional Police said Alfred Lewerentz was southbound when he lost control of his 1987 Buick in white-out condi- tions. The car struck a snowdrift and then veered into the path of the northbound truck driven by Paul Turner of Oshawa. The accident took place about 7:00 AM as Mr. Lewerentz of RR 1 Nestleton was on his way to work at General Motors where he is a personnel director. The driver of the truck suffered minor injuries. Police said no charges will be laid. - Mr. Lewerentz is survived by his wife Kathleen, daugh- ters Carole and Vanessa, and a son Shawn, 10. The purpose of this meeting was to discuss ways to try and save the "Big Grass Marsh," a wetland of 100,000 acres in Southern Manitoba which had been devastated by poor conservation practices and the drought of the 1930's. In the 50 years since that first eventful meeting, Ducks Unlimited, of which Ducks Unlimited Canada is a part, has grown to become the largest privately funded wetland conser- vation organization in the world. DU has in those years carried out thousands of conservation pro- jects involving millions of acres of wetland habitat. Some members of the Port Perry Chapter of Ducks Unlimited were asked what the 50th anniversary of DU Canada meant to them, and just what this organization has been doing this past 50 years. Committee man Ken Stone said, 'I don't hunt, but I've been . an outdoorsman all my life. I en- joy the quietness and beauty I find in nature. I've been concerned with the way we have treated our environment -- especially our wetlands. DU Canada has created or restored over 4 million acres of wetlands in Canada during its 50 year history. That's why I'support it. This is an organization that really gets things done." Eric Fletcher, a Cartwright High School teacher added, 'I en- joy duck hunting. There is something special about being in a blind out in the marsh on a mis- ty autumn morning. It takes me away from the hustle and bustle of our modern world. Perhaps it is for the reasons Eric and Ken have given, but it is also for the camaraderie that ex- ists amongst true sportspeople. This Greenwing project is a hands on approach to teaching our children in the ways they can put something back into our environ- ment.
