Local business featured in a national magazine Have you ever leafed through a glossy homes magazine and wondered where the heck those beautiful houses are? If you take a gander at the February-March issue of Century Home, a national Canadian magazine devoted to country- style homes beautiful, you'll definitely know where at least one house, and one store, are. Right here in Port Perry, as a matter of fact. The store in question is The Set- tlement House, and its offshoots, Daphne's and Next Door. Three full-colour glossy pages are devoted to the popular gift stores, including photographs of the in- terior, and the Victorian exterior. The house in question belongs to Settlement House proprietors Daphne and Tom Mitchell, and in real life, is "settled"' on Lilla Street near the intersection of Queen. Five equally colourful pages are dedicated to the Mitchell's familiar colonial blue house, with its yellow and white trim, and stately verandah. And while the outside may be familiar, decorating buffs will be anxious to pick up a copy of Cen- tury Home to see the interior which is filled, not with antiques, but with eye-fooling reproduc- tions, and a wealth of country in- fluenced collectibles and folk art. It's no coincidence that the Mit- chell's home is reminiscent of their store. In accompanying stories to the photos, they admit it was their love of decorating which led Tom to quit his job as an accountant in 1978, and with the help of Daphne, opened the Settlement House. Since that time, the Mitchells have expanded both the store and their horizons, and recently open- ed another store called Our House in Thornhill. They also run a suc- cessful marketing business, apt- ly named Old Port Marketing. They'd been advertising in Cen- tury Home for years, but it wasn't until a year and a half ago that the magazine's owner approached the Mitchells with the suggestion of doing a photo story about their home. Daphne admits she wasn't thrilled about the idea at first, but when the magazine persisted, Tom talked her into it late last year.
