The Eagles finish on top The Port Perry Midget Eagles staged an exciting .comeback against Stouffville Monday night in Port Perry. Scoring four times in the last two minutes for a 7-4 victory. This win gave the Eages first place in the round robin and home ice advantage in the best of five against Cobourg or Stouffville. Port led off the scoring with the only goal in the first period by Mike Sorley with assists going to John Lally and Paul Wylie. Each team drew five minutes on penalties and the play didn't have much flow to it as both teams were never at full strength often enough. Period two had Stouffville tying the game up on a deflection from a Port Perry defenseman's skate at 13:45. Twenty-two seconds later, Port grabbed the lead on a loose puck in a goal mouth scram- ble with Clair Cornish firing it in with setups from Lally and Phil McBride. At 9:22 Stouffville defenseman Jamie Showers 'broke in on the right side and snapped one in off the fan goal post to tie the game 2-2. The Eagles again came back quickly only twenty-one seconds later PORT PERRY WADO KAI Award winning Karate Club for all ages. Economical and family rates. On this goal, Taylor cruised in over the blue line on the right side and cut around the defenseman and went to the net for the shot which the goaltender stopped, but the rebound came right back to the centreman who tapped it in while sitting on the ice. Before the period ended Stouffville tied the game on a breakaway with the Eagles defense caught up ice on a quick turnover. . In the third period with the game droning on at a snail's pace, Stouffville came half alive and potted what seemed to be the win- ner with five minutes to play. A brief skirmish broke out with 2:53 left to go, sending three players to the box on both teams. This meant Port would play three on three, something they have been excellent at all year. The Eagles sent Captain Brad Menzies, War- ren Geer and Steve Connors over the boards to make something happen. From the face-off, Port dominated the play with Menzies forechecking in the oppositions end and corraling a loose puck which he fed to Geer in the slot PS -- TROPHIES & ENGRAVING Team Jackets & Uniforms Skate Sharpening Silk Screening done on Premises PINERIDGE SPORTS SHOP PHONE 985.2839" 7 mm------ General Meeting 10:00 AM SCUGOG TWP. Forty seconds later, Connors on a setup from Menzies and Brad Bricknell scored the go-ahead goal. Twelve seconds later Con- nors again scored on a breakaway to give Port a 6-4 lead. The final marker was tallied by Lally on helpers from Fitzgerald and Kevin Gibson. The following night in Cobourg, the Eagles came out flatter than an "A Cup" and got worse, bow- ing to a fired up Cobourg squad 8-4. As the game was a "Must win" for Cobourg and a nothing game for Port, the Eagles were con- sistently beaten to the puck all night. The game featured its usual chippiness while bordering on stupidity as some of the penal- ty calls attested to. Cobourg jumped out quickly to a 2-0 lead before Port Perry tied it 2-2 and a pair of goals by Mark Barkey assisted by Brad Menzies and Phil McBride. Before the first period had ended, Cobourg re- bounded with two goals of their own to take a 4-2 lead into the se- cond period. In the middle game, Port ap- plied the pressure until Barkey again round the range, but due to a quick whistle the goal was disallowed. Warren Geer cut the margin to one goal, but Cobourg quickly scored again to enter the third period leading 5-3. In the third period, the Baby Cougars chewed up and spit out the Eagle Feathers by a 3-1 margin as Todd Taylor from Clair Cornish and John Lally scored Port's lone marker of the period.
