By a large margin, the Regional council last week voted no to a sug- gestion that a sound system by in- stalled in the chambers at the Durham building on Rossland Road in Whitby. The sound system suggestion was made by Oshawa councillor Doug Wilson who said it is often difficult eT 2 Herb Swain of Blackstock has been presented with the for Reg. council to hear what a speaker is saying during council meetings. © But with a tax hike of around eight per cent coming this year at the Regional level, councillors decided it is not a prudent time to be spen- ding money on sound systems. The Regional council chamber is a large, high-ceiling room and the acoustics are not top rate. Cost of installing a sound system (individual mikes at each coun- cillor's desk) is about $50,000 for a bottom of the line set-up. Roly Coy, president of the Blackstock Fair Board made the presentation last week. Herb, who will be 83 this May has worked for the Blackstock Fair for more than 60 years and said "I'm just glad to help out over the years. They are a great bunch of people to work with on Fair Day." The Devo- tional period will take a different form this time when a'cassette that was taped at one of the special Cof- fee Hours, will be presented. Some of the ladies may wish to work at some handi-craft while they listen. Others prefer to concentrate. The "Head" ladies are already starting a winter project on a small quilt, at the home of Mrs. Alva Thompson. A group of Island people known as the Golden Slippers, mostly ladies who have discovered hidden talents in music have taken lessons and now developed enough to entertain the public as well as gain pleasure for themselves. Therefore, they presented a concert at the Island Hall on Sat. afternoon. Over fifty relatives and friends at- tended the surprise party in Oshawa on Sun. for Mrs. Daisy Wylie at her home. She did not learn about it un- til Sat. night, proving it was a well kept secret. The people of the Island extend sympathy to the family of the late Cliff Love of Highway 7A who pass- ed away last Sunday. He had spent many months with failing health in the Fairview Lodge but was sustain- ed by true care and a Loving fami- ly. He is fondly remembered by all who had business, social and church associations with him. Several winter vacationers have returned from Florida. So Nelson and Betty Reader, Allen and Evelyn Redman, Irene Carter and Camille Crozier feel that they came back to _ Spring. But just wait, they aren't clear yet.
