Region to back Sunday veto Durham Region has backed a Cumberland Township resolution opposing the province leaving Sun- day shopping laws up to municipalities. Cumberland Township council is sending its resolution to the Associa- tion of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) and all major urban coun- cils, stating that the province's plan to make municipalities responsible for Sunday shopping laws is "another attack on the family struc- 4 ture by this government and a moral issue." The resolution calls for the On- tario government, if it passes such regulations, to pick up all costs municipalities might incur (in polic- ing and transit, for example) and opposes the "balkanjzation" of the Lord's Day Act. Ajax Mayor Bill McLean said AMO is meeting this week and will consider a motion calling for the association to reconfirm its opposi- tion to Sunday shopping.
