26 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, February 2, 1988 Pee Wee tournament at the Scugog Arena " Legionaires lose overtime final This week has proved to be a very busy week of hockey for the Port Perry Pee Wee Legionaires. The boys played three playoff games, as well as participated in their home tournament. The tournament started them out ~ with a game dgainst the Oshawa Red Wings. The game was a mat- chup of two very competitive teams. The boys all played well but lost by a 3-1 margin. The only goal of the game was scored by Jeff Parry on a rebound shot made by Jeff Andrews. Steve Laird picked up a: assist on the goal as well. The team then played against Bracebridge, and again another , great game of hockey was executed. The first period was scoreless and then Bracebridge chalked up the opening goal. Jason Cochrane scored Port's first goal with an end to end rush, and slid one neatly between the goalie's legs. Brother Gavin picked up the assist on the goal. Bracebridge scored again to put the Legionaires behind, but Dave a | In the A Division championship of the Legion Pee Wee tournament on Saturday in Port Perry, the local Legionaires jumped to an early 2-0 lead over Bolton. But the game went into overtime and Bolton scored after a minute of play to win Pashle; picked up a perfect pass from linemate Chris Macl.2od to beat the goalie on the open side of _ - the net. With only 18 seconds left in the game Port claimed its victory on a three man play by Jason Cochrane, Steve Laird, and Jeff Parry. Jason was able to beat the goalie easily with his hard shot. The final game was against Bolton and the fans'enjoyed one of the best games of hockey played by two great teams. Steve Laird scored for Port early in the game with a low backhand shot. Jason Cochrane assisted on the goal. Again Steve Laird scored for the Legionaires on an unassisted ef- fort. But the next period looked like it was going to be kept scoreless until 1:29 left in the period and Bolton was then able to catch goalie Rick Hut- chinson unawares. In the third period Bolton was able to score again to tie up the game, and the overtime period was on. . Unfortunately, Port was not able to hold off the Bolton team and at ig Brothers and Big Sisters of North Durham "Be a friend to a Child" the 3:59 mark of overtime Bolton won the game. Congratulations to some fine hockey by all the players. On Monday night the boys travell- ed to Stouffville to play their first playoff game and came home with a6-3 victory. Stouffville was au.e to score twice in the first period before the Legionaires could get on the scoreboard, but with Steve Laird scoring our first goal the boys came alive and kept up the pressure. Assisting on Steve's goal was Jason Cochrane and Jeff Parry. In the second period Jason Cochrane had a great unassisted ef- fort to tie the game all up, and then Jeff Andrews made a blistering wrist shot to put Port ahead by one goal. Nathan Brown assisted on the goal. In the third period Jason Cochrane came up with another great shot to score for Port, with the assists to Steve Laird and Jeff Parry. Gavin Cochrane lobbed one in over the blueline and the goalie then put it in himself. Chris MacLeod assisted on the goal. Jason it 3. 2. John Christie of Branch 419 presented the trophy to Bolton captain Mark Cancian and game MVP Todd Guindon. At right is Legionaire captain Steve Laird. The championship was a highly entertaining hockey game. Atoms face test The Malmont Farms Atoms are finding their first taste of BB playoff action to be a tough mouthful. Monday night, they opened the round robin series in Cobourg. The Chevy's opened up a 5-0 lead fairly carly in the game. Things went downhill from there as nothing * worked for Port and the game end- Cochrane picked up his hat trick on a backhand shot, after Steve Laird and Jeff Parry had worked hard.to get it to Jason. On Friday night the team played in Port Perry against Cobourg and had their second playoff victory with a 8-4 win. In the first period captain Steve Laird again opened up the scoring when he picked up a well executed pass from linemate Jeff Parry. The balance of the period remained scoreless but not long into the se- cond period Port scored a'series of 5 goals. Duane- Empringham scored the first one when he slipped the puck hetween the goalies legs on a pass from Brad Moase. Jason McBride also assisted on the goal. Jeff Parry scored on a quick rush, after pick- ing up on a great passing play from linemate's Jason Cochrane and Steve Laird. Jeff Parry came back with his second goal after picking up a rebound shot made by Jason Cochrane. Steve Laird again pick- ed up an assist with his fine efforts on thi§ play. Jason Cochrane scored our next goal when he deeked the goalie after picking up a pass from Jeff Andrews, and Jeff Parry. 'In the third period Jason McBride came up, witht another great deek after picking up the puck from Brad Moase and Daryl Vanderslagt. Duane Empringham came up with his second goal of the game after a lot of hard scrambling in front of . Cobourg' s net. Brad Moase and Jason McBride both assisted on this fine play. It was only fitting that Steve Laird, who scored our open- ing goal should score our final goal on a fine passing play by Jason Cochrane and Jeff Parry. On Sunday night the team travell- ed to Cobourg to again match our skills and were able to win with a 5-3 margin. Nathan Brown came up with our first goal on a hard one- timer. after Chris MacLeod set him up with a perfect pass. Jeff Andrews worked hard along the boards to pick up an assist on this goal. Then Steve Laird scored for the Legionaires after popping one in Y M from in front of the Cobourg net. Jason Cochrane and Jeff Parry assisted on the goal. In the second period Cobourg was able to score, but the Legionaires were kept from scoring any more goals. In the third period Cobourg tied up the game before we could score again, but Jeff Parry scored the goal which put us ahead with a nice soft slide in shot, after picking up the pass from Jason Cochrane. Daryl Vanderslagt also assisted on the goal. scored for Port on a hard shot from in front of the goalie after receiving a great pass from linemate Jeff Parry. Daryl Vanderslagt scored our final goal on a high shot from just inside Cobourg's blueline. Nathan Brown assisted on the goal. This win has put the Legionaires in first place for the first series of playoff games, even though they have one final game against Stouffville. Because | sometimes forget to make mention of this fact. I would like to point out that our team is lucky to have two very fine goaltenders who help make it possi- ble for us to win so many games. The boys are Rick Hutchinson and Shawn Larocque and without these two the outcome of many games could he a lot different. Friday night at home, Malmont produced a consistent effort, but got no bounces as the Stouffville Clip- pers scored a third period power play goal; then added another for a 2-0 win. The Chad Kearns,» Joe Broadworth, Dave Bourgeois line created steady pressure on the Clip- pers but could not connect for any markers. Malmont Farms will now host Cobourg on Wednesday night in what will certainly be their last chance to qualify for the next leg of the playoffs. HELP A CHILD ...
