History was acted out in her own driveway Columbus and Area News by Lorna Miller ~ Hi, Fellow Columbites: So much for your balmy breezes. Put your winter woolies back on and hunker down for another winter seige. Can anybody enlighten me as to whether this was a January thaw or not? And if it was -- what does that signify? It's been a strange winter to say the least and I for one will be glad when it is over. How about your family? If you're into winter sports like snowmobiling and such, this winter hasn't probably béen the best one ever, but if snow is only shovel fodder you were pro- bably happy. Anyway, last Mon. Jan. 25th, a lit- tle bit of history was acted out in our very own driveway. It provided the setting for the passing of the Inter- School Olympic Torch from Ridgeway Public School, Oshawa to Cartwright Central Public School, Blackstock. C. Thompson, vice- principal of Ridgeway and her three chosen students, Zaheed Bardai, Michael Longfield and Adrienne Bickel -- who had completed a sym- bolic run from Ridgeway P.S. to Stephenson Road, Oshawa -- pass- ed the torch to Mr. Rutledge, Prin- cipal of Cartwright Central P.S. and his two torchbearers, Jennifer Vokins and Jason Cliff. The Ridgeway runners were chosen by ballot. Every student was asked to guess the exact date that the Olympic Torch would pass through the area. The correct guesses were placed in a ballot box and the three runners were picked from this lot to carry their own ver- sion of that eternal light. It was a day that they will remember all of their lives and we will too, because they inadvertently made us a part of it. Thank you very much. Pack up your papers in a plastic bag, and . Charity begins at home, let our charity be proof of this wisdom. Our resident Ms. Pac Man Wizard is off to Flin Flon. Peter is headed out to head-up a geological survey of the area to unearth hidden gold. We'll all miss him. Practically every night around five o'clock, we would hear the electri¢ song of the board and we'd know that he was back for another serious round of Ms. Pac Man. He's been a friend of the family since the girls were small. He was just a university kid with a fast car, an alpha Romero, and an enthusiastic love of life that bubbled over. We watched his pro- gress through University, various jobs, various ladies, changes of direction and opinion and various vehicles -- but one thing never varied, our friendship. Now he's off into the Manitoba wilderness, and that friendship will remain undiminished by the miles. Good luck, Pete. Shame on me! Last week I told you to call a John Leblanc for tickets to the Valentine's dance being held on Fri. Feb. 12th, at the Corinthian Hall. Sorry, sorry, sorry. The dance will be held then, but if you have been calling 655-3592 and asking for Mr. LeBlanc and he isn't there, don't be surprised! That is the number for John Lehane and he is the man with the tickets. I don't know where Mr. LeBlanc lives, or even if he exists -- you see I seem . "to have made him up. So, from now on. to get tickets call John Lehane 655-3592, and he'll be glad to sell you tickets for a night of fun and frivoli- ty at the Valentine's Dance. Well, that's all for now.
