McClelland With two games left in the regular schedule, the Port Perry MoJacks are showing some positive signs of hitting high gear just in time for the playoffs. The MoJacks fashioned a pair of victories over the weekend against tough opposition which has given the team problems at times this season. On Friday evening, the MoJacks turned in a solid performance all around to pin a 7-5 loss on the divi- sion leading Lakefield Chiefs, a win that came just five days after the Chiefs had defeated the MoJacks by an 8-3 score. Friday's win was the first this season over the powerful Lakefield squad and there's no doubt it gave the players a big psychological lift. Sunday night on home ice, the Mo- Jacks went on a scoring binge mid- way through the third period to break a fairly close game wide open en route to a 10-3 victory over the Little Britain Merchants, a team which has played the MoJacks tough in several games this year. . The MoJacks were leading this one 5-2 in the third when they open- ed the flood-gates and rammed home five goals in the span of two miinutes and forty s&onds. The visitors managed one more late in the game but the outcome had been settled. : The MoJacks never trailed in this fast-paced entertaining game which featured only a handful of minor penalties on both sides. They took a 3-0 lead into the dressing room after the first period on goals by Kevin Long, Thane Ellis and Rob Baker. The Merchants scored two in the se- cond by Willy Thornbury and Larry Reid. The only MoJack goal in the middle frame came from Greg War- riner while killing a penalty. He got in behind the Merchant defense for a pass from Kevin Long that put him into the clear and he beat goalie Rob Harris with a nice fake at the goal-mouth. The MoJacks went up 5-2 at 7:19 of the third as Rob Baker collected his second of the game. Then at 9:37, the MoJacks put their scoring machine in over-drive and by the 12:15 mark the score was 10-2 as Kevin Long, Craig Menzies, Len Giacalone, Dean Smethurst and John Harman made life miserable for the Merchants and goalie Rob Harris. The final goal of the game came late in the period when the Mer- chants Jerry Kea broke in alone to beat Paul Goreski with a wrist shot. Aside from the scoring flurry in the third period, this was a fairly even hockey game and at times the Merchants had the MoJacks on the run in their end. Paul Goreski, who's seeing full time duty in the cage due to an injury to Brian Tarleton had to be very steady at times to prevent the Merchants from taking a lead. Both teams stuck to hockey and kept the sticks and elbows down, with the MoJacks taking ten minors and the Merchants seven. Rob Baker was the best MoJack on the ice in this one hitting for two goals and two assists. He easily could have had three more goals as he was flying down left wing the en- tire game. The MoJacks fired 39 shots at the Merchant net, while Paul Goreski faced 27 shots, several were quality scoring chances. In Lakefield on Friday night, the MoJacks were able to pepper the Chiefs with nearly 50 shots for the second straight game. And this time, the shots were going in as they came home with a 7-5 win. John Harman and Dave Burnett staked the MoJacks to a 2-1 lead in the first. Both teams added three more in the second with Steve Ashby, Dean Smethurst and Kevin Long clicking for Port Perry. Len Giacalone hit on a power play mid- way through the third to give Mo- Jacks a 6-4 lead, but the Chiefs got one with three minutes left to nar- row the lead to 6-5. With less than a minute to play and the Chiefs enjoying a man ad- vantage, Kevin Long put the game out of reach with a short-handed marker on a strong second effort deep in the Lakefield zone. The MoJacks were missing a cou- ple of regular defensemen and John Hartford showed his versatility to the team by turning in a great game on defense. And he picked up two assists as well. Penalties hurt the Chiefs as they were nicked for 16 minors and one mis-conduct. The MoJacks took eight minors and there were fighting majors to Darren Nesbitt and Jason Crawford. For the Chiefs, Tim McCormick was the trigger man with a hat trick. Next home game for the MoJacks is this coming Sunday afternoon (Jan. 31) when they meet Uxbridge for a 1:30 face off. And the final game before playoffs for the Mo- Jacks will be a return encounter in ' Uxbridge on Friday, Feb. 5. Although no official an- nouncements have been made at this time, there are indications that the opening playoff rounds will shape up this way. First place Lakefield probably will take on Lindsay in the best of seven opening round. Second place Port Perry will like- ly choose the Uxbridge Bruins as the opponents in the opening round, although the MoJack management and coaching staff have not made this official. But there are several strong -easons why the MoJacks most like- Printers take a win Port Perry Novice Printing open- ed the scoring in the first period by a goal from Matt Bengel (1st this year), unassisted. Bowmanville came back quickly to tie it up. Derek Leeming scored twice assisted by Chris Jamieson on both and Jason Hopkins on one. Bowmanville scored twice more. In the third perioa win wie game tied, Danny Robinson put Port ahead on a quick shot unassisted. Good defensive plays by Chris Drury and Mark Turnbull. Several scoring chances by Port's Bobby Cracknell and Aaron Levy. Paul Shrigley stopped several rushes on net! A lot of hard work won this one. Way to go guys! ly will select Uxbridge for the first playoff round. The intense rivalry between these two clubs' should generate a great deal of fan interest in both towns, and team travelling expenses for the series would be minimal. Also, the MoJacks don't want to play last place Madoc because of the travelling expenses and because the Hurricanes are not drawing the fans the way Uxbridge An unidentified MoJack celebrates a goal Sunday night in Junior C action against the Lit- tle Britain Merchants. The MoJacks celebrated ten goals in this one as they broke the game open in the third period en route to a 10-3 victory. would. Lastly, a short relatively easy playoff series against the Hur- ricanes could take the competitive edge off the MoJack game and work to their detriment in the tough round robin series to follow. In other Junior C action over the weekend Lindsay defeated Madoc 7-3, Bowmanville nipped Uxbridge 6-5, Lakefield downed Lindsay 7-3 In Scugog Mens Hockey League hard fought end to end game in which J & D Carpentry and Norton's Home Improvements tied 1-1. Public school kids will get in free and admission for everyone else will be a single buck. Game time is 1:30 p.m. between the MoJacks and Bruins in a match that appears to be a playoff tune-up for both teams. Coming on the heels of a 7-5 win over Lakefield on Friday night, the MoJacks could be hitting full stride at the best time with playoffs just around the corner. (See story for details). Everybody eyes first spot The first game of the day was a- Smith 3 goals, Ray Zaparanuik and Ed Olsen 1 goal each. The second period saw no goals, but extremely good team play was evident by Port as they carried their skills into the 3rd period and taking the lead with 2 nice goals.
