Uxbridge has close to 40 pits within its boundaries and the policy in that municipality is to deal with each pit on an individual basis. The agreements cover such things as berming, hours of pit operations, entrances into the pits and truck routes, rehabilitation of areas of the pit which become depleted of gravel, and written guarantees that should the pit operation lead to well contamination in nearby homes, the gravel company will be responsible for supplying those homes with water. . In fact, ina recent letter to the Township, Pen- ny Manchee of RR 4, Port Perry said the residents object to all points. The amendment is to expand by 13 acres a gravel pit that has been operating for about 25 years on some 60 acres of land. Residents claim there has been no attempt to rehabilitate the depleted areas, and that heavy trucks use Concession 4. Ward 1 councillor Yvonne Christie told the Star last week that she agrees the residents in the area need some kind of protection "within reason.'"' She said she had not been- informed that the Region's planning committee would be dealing with the issue on January 5. Mrs. Christie said she will be con- tacting municipal officials in Ux- bridge Township to get a copy of the gravel pit agreements in force there so that Scugog may incorporate all or parts of the agreements. "I think we should look at those (Uxbridge) agreements to see what kinds of protection they offer pro- perty owners."' : discussions Mrs. Christie said she is not op- posed to the pit expansion since -gravel is a necessity these days, but efforts must be taken to protect those who live in the vicinity of a pit. And an Oshawa woman was taken to Wellesley Hospital in Toronto for treatment of burns suffered in the same accident. A spokesman for the Whitby OPP detachment said the accident took place just before 9:00 AM as Con- stable G. Brittan and Auxiliary Con- stable T. Rathwell were attempting to stop a speeding car in the east bound lanes of Hwy. 401 at Brock " Street. As the cruiser braked suddenly it veered into the guard rails and the gas tank caught fire. A second vehicle driven by Heather Schneider, 40, of Oshawa: became involved in the accident. She was taken to Toronto hospital suffering from serious burns. Two . passengers in her van escaped with minor injuries. The OPP spokesman said the burns to the two police officers were not serious and they were later released from hospital in Whitby.
